Watson Remembers Warrington Bombing

Former Everton captain Dave Watson has paid tribute to the victims of the Warrington bombing on the 20th anniversary of the tragic event.

An IRA attack involving two bombs hidden in litter bins on Bridge Street claimed the lives of two young boys and injured 54 others.

One of those killed was 12-year-old Evertonian Tim Parry.

Defender Watson and then-manager Howard Kendall met the family in the days after the bombing and later attended his funeral.

Having lived locally at the time, Watson recalled the devastating impact it had on the area.

He said: “It was totally unbelievable in the town afterwards.

“You just don’t think something like that will happen in the town where you live.

“It was devastating not just in Warrington but touched people all over the world."

"[Visting the family] was something we wanted to do ourselves anyway and it just so happened Tim was an Evertonian, so there was a few of us who went.

“We just wanted to do anything we could to help the parents.

“The funeral was a big occasion with TV cameras everywhere but it was very touching and seeing the parents that day is something that will stay with you.

“A lot of good work has gone on since and [Tim's parents] Colin and Wendy have done a tremendous job trying to push things and make them better.”

A minute's silence was observed in Warrington at 12:27pm on Wednesday to commemorate the anniversary.
