Weir Nets The Winner
Highlights from 1-0 victory over Manchester City in February 2006.
David Weir had a canny habit of scoring important goals for Everton, a quality that was typified when Manchester City visited Goodison Park in February 2006.
The Blues captain found himself in the right place at the right time to score what proved to be the only goal of the game as David Moyes’ side continued their mid-season purple patch to make in nine matches unbeaten.
Weir bundled the ball over the line from two-yards out on eight minutes to send Everton on their way to a deserved victory.
Furthermore, the Scot and his defensive partner Alan Stubbs produced a gutsy defensive effort to ensure that Stuart Pearce’s team – containing future Evertonian Sylvain Distin – drew a blank in front of goal.
The defeat proved to be one of 13 on the road for City that season as poor form over the second half of the campaign saw them slip from eighth at the turn of the year to 15th after the final round of fixtures.
Everton, meanwhile, had to settle for 11th place after taking 50 points from their 38 matches.
