Alan Stubbs believes his side have what it takes to maintain their excellent start to 2013.

The second string made it three wins from three on Sunday afternoon as goals from John Lundstram and Ross Barkley saw off Middlesbrough at Southport’s Haig Avenue.

The victory put Everton at the top of the U21 Group 1 league table – a position they will have to remain in to qualify for the end-of-season play-offs.

Top spot would secure a home tie against the champions of Group Two, with the winners then progressing to the semi-finals involving the three best teams in the Elite Group.

“They are doing everything that I’m asking of them at the moment,” Stubbs told evertontv after the Boro game. “There are some talented lads in the group and if we can put that team out every week we won’t be far away from doing really well.

“Obviously there are lads that we want to go out on loan and learn, which they need for the next step, but when we have got everyone together, we will give the best a game. That’s all we can ask for.

“I said to them at the end that they are playing with a lot of confidence. The lads at the back are giving them a platform to go and play football because we are keeping clean sheets at the moment.

“They know what they have done wrong in a game but it’s not for me to tell them. I could go in there and talk about the negatives, but they know if there was a pass they should have made and not done it, or if there was a place they should been and didn’t get back early enough.

“We’ll go through that on the video, but at the moment I’m really happy for them. They are playing with a lot of confidence and are getting results to reward that.”

The Under-21s are next in action on Monday 25 February when they travel to the north-east to play Sunderland, who are winless from their opening four fixtures. To view the current standings, click here.
