Phil Jagielka says Everton will need to play better in next week’s replay against Oldham if they are to secure their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The England man was disappointed with the way the Blues defended in the latter stages of Saturday’s cup tie at Boundary Park, which culminated in the Latics scoring a stoppage time equaliser with virtually the last action of the contest.

The two teams meet for a second time a week on Wednesday (27 February) with home tie against Wigan Athletic in the last eight the prize for the winners.

Jagielka said: “[The manager said] We didn’t do enough. We created a couple of chances in the second half but we didn’t manage to test the goalkeeper or the final ball wasn’t quite good enough.

“We were on top after we got the second goal but we needed to get that third. Unfortunately we didn’t and fortunately for the neutrals and Oldham fans it stayed at 2-1. Then they got the great header to equalise.

“Obviously going down the hill [in the second half], they put us under a bit of pressure. We had quite a few experienced players out there but we started to panic a little bit. Clearances didn’t go where we wanted them to which could have bought us a bit more time.

“It wasn’t to be, that was the way the game went. The manager wasn’t very happy but at least we are still in the cup. Hopefully we will put in a better performance at Goodison.”

Despite being held to a draw, Jagielka took consolation in scoring his second goal of the season.

The England international, who also netted against Wigan on Boxing Day, managed to guide Kevin Mirallas’ corner into the net at the start of the second half – despite being wrestled to the floor by the overzealous Lee Barnard.

“I just sort of stood there,” Jagielka explained. “I think the guy wanted a piggy back – he jumped on me but I managed to deflect the ball home. I’m not too sure people knew who it was because I was laid at the bottom of a pile.

“It was a great ball in by Kev and I think he put one in for Ossie about five minutes later which he nearly got on the end of.

“It was a game of fine margins and hopefully next time we can come out on top.”

Victor TayCome on you Blues. let's go all the way and bring the FA Cup home!
