The Greatest Ever FA Cup Comeback?
1966 final shortlisted in ESPN poll.
Everton's 1966 FA Cup final victory over Sheffield Wednesday has been shortlisted in a poll to discover the competition's greatest ever comeback.
Two goals down with 59 minutes played, Harry Catterick's men looked down and out at Wembley.
Yet a little known Cornishman signed from Plymouth Argyle a year before was about to make his name in the most dramatic of fashions.
Despite having played just a handful of first-team games, Mike Trebilcock found himself not only in the Toffees’ starting line-up but in the right place at the right time to fire past goalkeeper Ron Springett and reduce the arrears.
Five minutes later, the 21-year-old was at it again, blasting the ball beyond Springett from the edge of the box to pull his side level.
A now-famous pitch invasion by Everton fan Eddie Cavanagh couldn't derail the Blues and with 16 minutes left to play, the most unlikely of turnarounds was completed, Derek Temple racing through and making no mistake with a thunderous low drive from 18 yards.
A sensational comeback, certainly. But is it the best?
FA Cup broadcasters ESPN are trying to find out – and you can help the Blues come out on top. Head to the ESPN website now to vote for this game and make it the greatest FA Cup comeback of all time.
The match is up against the 1953 final between Bolton and Blackpool, Tranmere’s fifth round comeback against Southampton in 2001, Liverpool’s final victory over Arsenal from the same year and Manchester City’s 4-3 victory at Tottenham in 2004. Votes are already being cast and the poll will close ahead of this weekend's fifth round ties.
