Cole Feeling The Pressure
Defender ready to battle with Baines for England left-back spot.
Ashley Cole admits he's feeling the pressure from Leighton Baines for the right to be England's first choice left-back.
Cole is set to earn his 100th cap against Brazil at Wembley but faces an ever increasing challenge from the in-form Everton man.
England boss Roy Hodgson has welcomed the competition, saying that he is ‘pleased to have a headache’ and that it ‘won’t be an easy choice’.
And Cole, whose place in tonight’s team has already been confirmed, insists there would be no hard feelings if he was eventually ousted from the position he has held for the last 12 years by the Blues’ star defender.
“It is not just about me or Leighton. It is about the team,” Cole insisted. “If he [Baines] is playing well and plays in front of me, it is going to benefit the team. It is not as if I am going to start moaning or saying I should be playing.
"We are all great players. If there comes a time – and there will – when I am not first-choice left-back, it won’t be a problem. I am here to help the team.
“I am not going to quit just because someone is playing better than me or deserves to play. I enjoy being with the manager and the players.
“It is stiff competition but I have had it so many times – Wayne Bridge and so many other players who were going to take my place.
“I just get my head down and keep fighting for my place.”
