Villa Conquered In 2009
Highlights from a memorable FA Cup meeting four years ago.
En route to reaching the FA Cup final in 2009, Everton brushed aside Aston Villa in the fifth round, gaining revenge for the home league defeat suffered by Martin O’Neill’s men just two months earlier.
Ashley Young’s injury-time winner had edged a five-goal thriller in December, but when Villa returned to Goodison in February, they were convincingly eliminated from England’s oldest knockout competition.
The 3-1 victory is best remembered for Jack Rodwell’s first goal in Everton colours, scored after just three minutes.
Villa were back level pegging when James Milner netted just on seven minutes, although the Blues’ advantage was regained from the penalty spot by Mikel Arteta midway through the first half.
15 minutes before the end, Tim Cahill converted from close range to seal Everton’s passage through to the quarter-finals.
