Magic Numbers: Wigan

We look ahead to the Boxing Day encounter with facts and figures.

Magic Numbers: Wigan

Following Saturday's 2-1 win at West Ham, Wigan Athletic are next up for the Blues.

Here, we preview the Boxing Day encounter at Goodison with the aid of facts and figures...

1 Wigan win at Goodison, in the first Premier League meeting between the two sides in September 2005.  Everton have lost only one of the 14 games played between the two clubs since then, with seven victories and six draws.

3 Premier League goals scored by Leighton Baines against Wigan, the most by any Everton player. All three strikes by the full-back against his former club have come from the spot.

5 Years since Everton last played at Goodison on Boxing Day – a 2-0 win over Bolton in 2007. The scheduled game against Birmingham two seasons ago was postponed.  Everton have won 10 and drawn four of their last 18 Premier League games played over the Christmas and New Year period since 2005.

7 Previous meetings between David Moyes and Roberto Martinez. The Scot has won three with four matches drawn, most recently 2-2 at Wigan in October.

Anichebe West HamEverton are yet to suffer defeat in a game that Victor Anichebe has scored.

20 After Saturday’s win at West Ham, the games in which Victor Anichebe has scored for Everton and not been on the losing side, more than any other player. Steven Pienaar has never lost any of the 19 games he has now scored in for the Toffees.

Curiously the Academy graduate scored at Goodison against Wigan in August 2007 when the South African made his Everton debut, and Anichebe repeated the feat at the DW Stadium in February 2012 when Pienaar played the first game of his second spell at the Club.

47 Matches at Goodison since the Toffees last played out a 0-0 draw – against Wigan in December 2010.  We have had just one goalless game since then – at Wolves in May 2012.

84 Previous games played by Everton on Boxing Day with our record being W37 D21 L26.  Our biggest victory is 5-0, achieved on three occasions, most recently against Sunderland in 1999.

97 Minutes played when Royston Drenthe scored for Everton in the corresponding fixture last season – the Dutchman’s strike in our 3-1 win is the latest goal netted for the Toffees in a league game.

Phil Jagielka Arsenal ApplausePhil Jagielka could make his 150th Premier League start.

149 Premier League starts for Phil Jagielka for Everton.  Incidentally, the centre-half made his 150th Premier League appearance for the Toffees at the DW Stadium in October.

499 Premier League matches played by Phil Neville. The Everton skipper has made 236 appearances for the Toffees to add to the 263 at Old Trafford.  Should he play on Boxing Day the 35-year-old will become only the seventh player to reach 500 Premier League games after Ryan Giggs, David James, Gary Speed, Frank Lampard, Emile Heskey and Sol Campbell.
