Moyes: We Were Due One

Manager revels in dramatic last-gasp turnaround.

David Moyes was delighted by Everton's last-gasp victory over Tottenham Hotspur - insisting his side were due a change in fortunes.

The Blues have themselves suffered from late drama in recent weeks but the Scot could barely conceal his joy as last-ditch goals from Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic reversed that trend.

“After the few finishes like that where we have lost points we were due one,” he said. “If Everton hadn’t won we would be sitting here asking how we hadn’t. We played terrifically well and the attacking play we had was fantastic.

“We just couldn’t find the final pass or final finish to kill it off at times.

“Tottenham got better after 15 minutes of the second half and we had to defend four or five corners and free-kicks. I thought we had actually grown into it again as they scored the goal.”

However, Clint Dempsey’s deflected strike was soon forgotten about as Pienaar marked his first appearance against his former club with a crucial leveller before Jelavic – suffering something of drought by his standards – struck in added time.

“I actually think our poorest passage of play was in that last 10 minutes,” admitted Moyes. “We were trying to move players around; it was scrappy and we had tried everything to get ourselves an opening.

“But we kept at it and we got it in the end.

“I thought Seamus Coleman played great today but I’m not convinced he was trying to pick out Steven. But it’s a ball that gave us a chance to score and Steven’s header was terrific.

"Jelavic’s finish was great as well because he was alert and alive. He could have been still but he gambled on something maybe nicking through and to finish it first time was excellent.”

The result lifted Everton to fourth in the Premier League table and Moyes insisted it was just reward for the hard work and effort his players have put in.

“The position we are in doesn’t shame Everton or the way we have been playing,” he added. “They have been playing that well all season.

"We could have quite easily slipped – the league is that tight.

"It feels good today but we have got to make sure we maintain it.”

David PattersonI could not be prouder to be an Evertonian. Great match boys. Hung in till the end and came away with the result. I loved the ball movement. The chances we created all match long. COYB
