PM Pledges Free School Support

David Cameron keen to visit Everton's unique school.

PM Pledges Free School Support

Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged to support Everton every step of the way in their quest to make their recently opened Free School the most successful in the country.

Mr Cameron met with Everton Free School Principal Adrian Packer at 10 Downing Street recently and has vowed to visit Liverpool and learn more about the school and the Club’s official charity, Everton in the Community.

The Prime Minister voiced his praise and admiration for Everton Free School’s forward-thinking approach and said the project is a great example of what can be achieved through the Free School movement.

“Such an enthusiastic endorsement from the Prime Minister means a great deal to Everton Free School,” said Mr Packer. “His commitment to supporting our work shows the government's seriousness in providing high quality educational opportunities to vulnerable and disadvantaged young people.

“We are also delighted with the comments from other ministers who share the belief we can lead the way for other football clubs to reach out and help their local communities in a similar way.”

Meanwhile, the School has received a fantastic level of cross-party support, including backing from the Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Joe Anderson, Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Education and Stephen Twigg, Shadow Secretary of State for Education, who will also be visiting the School in the New Year.

The event at Downing Street celebrated the opening of the first wave of Free Schools and was attended by educational leaders from across the county. The Prime Minister described his guests as ‘pioneers’ and thanked them for the hard work and innovation that has made such a positive impact on the lives of young people.

Mr Packer was also invited to speak at the Westminster Education Forum, at which he was commended for his observations concerning the challenges and opportunities of opening a new Alternative Provision Free School.

Everton Free School is currently the only 14-19 Alternative Provision Free School in the UK. Its opening this year coincides with the 25th anniversary of Everton in the Community, a celebration which will see the organisation embark on a high profile campaign to showcase the difference the charity has made to its local community.
