Hillsborough Justice Single

He Ain't Heavy is track choice for charity single.

Hillsborough Justice Single

The song which proved so emotive across Merseyside when it was chosen to pay tribute to the 96 Hillsborough victims at Goodison earlier this season has been selected to raise vital funds to support the families of the Hillsborough victims.

The single, a cover of The Hollies' He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, received its first play yesterday (Thursday) ahead of its release on 17 December 2012. All proceeds from the charity single - which is the favourite for the coveted Christmas number one slot - will go towards the Hillsborough families' legal costs in their fight for justice.

Everton's efforts in support of the campaign and the battle for justice for the 96 has received praise from the organisers behind the charity single - who have revealed Everton's part in providing the inspiration for the track.

Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright personally selected the song to be played when it so memorably encapsulated the mood in the city before the clash with Newcastle and following the publication of the Hillsborough Panel Report in September.

The iconic image from the build-up to that game of a boy and a girl in Everton and Liverpool kits with the numbers '9' and '6' on the back of their respective jerseys adorns the cover artwork for the single.

The release is the brainchild of Walton MP Steve Rotheram and he has been delighted by the way the cover version has come together.

He said: "It is a relief that we've been able to do it and it has turned out better than we could have ever envisaged. But we hope people now go out and buy it and do what we want it to do - make it number one. As long as we get people to buy it, we will be educating the masses.

"In itself, it is a beautiful representation of a fantastic song by the Hollies."

Evertonian Sir Paul McCartney was the latest pop icon to join the all-star line-up for the single, which also includes Robbie Williams, Melanie C, Paloma Faith and Beverley Knight.

Mr Rotherham admits pulling together such an all-star line-up has exceeded all expectations.

He added: "Sir Paul was really keen when he was approached. The only problem was if we could link up with Paul because of his hectic schedule. It happened this week on Tuesday. He went to Abbey Road and recorded his part of it.

"Some of the biggest UK recording artists have come together to record it to support the Hillsborough families' fight for justice and to raise funds for any future legal costs.

"While we are confident that the campaign for truth and justice is nearing a conclusion, for 23 years the bereaved Hillsborough families have carried the eternal flame of hope that we would one day see those responsible brought to justice.

"All profits from this single will go towards assisting with any legal costs incurred in that fight. The families have suffered enough."

The single has been produced by Guy Chambers and also features Rebecca Ferguson, Eliza Doolittle, Andy Brown (Lawson), Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes to Hollywood), Mick Jones (The Clash), Peter Hooton (The Farm), (The Justice Tonight band), Chris Sharrock (Beady Eye), Glen Tilbrook (Squeeze), Ren Harvieu, Dave McCabe (The Zutons), Paul Heaton (Beautiful South), Hollie Cook, Jon McClure (Reverend & The Makers), John Power (Cast) and Gerry Marsden (Gerry and the Pacemakers), all giving their time for free to record the single aiming to top the Christmas charts.
