Moyes' Most Exciting Squad
Boss says current crop of players is most exciting he's seen.
David Moyes says his high-flying Blues squad shouldn't be compared to that which secured fourth place in 2004/05 - even if he’s desperate for the class of 2012 to mirror their achievements.
Moyes believes his current crop of players is the most exciting he's presided over since his arrival over 10 years ago and an impressive start to the campaign sees them currently sitting in the coveted final Champions League position.
The 2004/05 success was built on another excellent start with plenty of attritional victories helping maintain the Blues' lofty league position.
And while the Everton boss says his current squad is comprised of a different type of footballer to those who upset the applecart seven years ago, he’s hopeful their swaggering style can produce similar results.
"The answer to that would be 'yes'," said Moyes, when asked if this was the most exciting team he’s managed. "I think our football since the Manchester United game has been excellent.
"But I'd never want to take away from all the other things - the determination, the good character and all the things I would hope from every Everton team, even when we have flair and all the ability in it as well.
“The players who played in 2004/05 were very consistent and could grind out a lot of victories and won one or two really important games when it mattered.
"This team we have got now are slightly different, we have flair players and different types of players. I am hopeful we can try and do it [finish in the top four] but it's a big ask and a long way to go."
Moyes had always maintained he wouldn't assess Everton's start until 10 games in and now that landmark has been reached, he offered his analysis.
"I could be happier," he said. "But I am really pleased with the way the players have performed, they have done a good job so we are asking them to keep it going. The next period is up to Christmas time and we will make a judgement after that as to how we have done."
