David Moyes has urged his side to record a derby result which illustrates equality on Merseyside.

The Everton manager explained that he believes his side are closer than ever to being the stronger of the two local rivals.

And Moyes believes a win at Goodison Park on Sunday would signify the end of the Blues underdogs tag.

"I think we are much closer. I think we went into the FA Cup semi-final as slight favourites because of our form, it didn’t work out that way as we lost the game 2-1 but over my time here I think we have been playing catch-up with Liverpool. We have to say that honestly, that is the case.

"We are trying to get closer and I think we possibly go into this game slightly ahead of Liverpool by what people would think. But we need to prove it, we didn't do it in the game at Wembley so we have to try and do it in this one."

Liverpool are undergoing a period of transition under new manager Brendan Rogers but Moyes does't think his inexperience of this fixture will have an impact.

Equally, his two triumphs over Rogers' Swansea outfit last term will have little bearing, the Blues boss insisted.

"Brendan will have experience from Cardiff and Swansea derbies as well, which are fiercely contested" continued Moyes "I played in Old Firm games so when I came here I wasn't too surprised.

"I don't think last season counts at all. He's manager of a different club now. He's manager of a big club with a big tradition and I think that changes.

"I don't look that way when I play against managers that have beaten me, I don't think about that. You go into the game as two teams on the day and you take the game as it comes.

"He has his own style and I'm sure Brendan will want his team to play the way he wants them to do and I'll do the same with mine."

David KershawMake them play how we want them to and we'll have no problem at all. They have two dogs at centre half and Jelevic will get chances. Stop Suarez and then all you have to do is score. COYB
