Thomas Hitzlsperger is keen to turn his short-term deal into a long-term stay with the Blues.

The former Germany international has agreed a deal with the Blues that will keep him at Goodison until January.

Having earned that opportunity following a four-week trial in which the former Aston Villa and West Ham midfielder proved his fitness, he has now set his sights on figuring in the first-team and earning a more long-term contract.

He told evertontv: "First of all my focus is on the short-term. There are not many games between now and January but I want to stay beyond January because I enjoy it so much here. I think it is in my hands. I will get lots of opportunities to show what I can do in training and hopefully I will get plenty of games and I can prove to the gaffer I am worth keeping here beyond January. That is why I will work very, very hard.

"I think I am suited to the Premier League. It was my decision to come back after the previous season in Germany. I just wanted to be back here in England - I have had five years in Germany and five years in England but I have always said that England is where I want to be playing. The atmosphere, the people, the mentality - that is what I like and that is why I am so happy to be here."

David Moyes has suggested he will be cautious with Hitzlsperger as he regains his match fitness after a long-term injury lay off that restricted him to just six appearances for Wolfsburg last term.

Named on the bench for Sunday's first-team game at QPR, the midfielder is also keen to take advantage of opportunities as an over-aged player in the Club's Under-21 side to continue gaining his match sharpness.

He added: "My injury is very good. I am happy with the way things are now. I've been working hard and it has been like a pre-season coming back into it.

"I've played two games - for the Under-21s at Norwich and in a friendly match against Huddersfield - and I'm feeling very good. Of course I need more games to get up to match fitness but in general I'm very happy with my condition and how things are going."

Hitzlsperger could also figure for Alan Stubbs' Under-21s against Arsenal on Monday.
