Baines Backs Hitz Decision
Leighton tells fans' conference that German could be 'useful'.
Leighton Baines believes the acquisition of Thomas Hitzlsperger is a shrewd one as Everton look to develop their variety of play.
Hitzlsperger signed for the Blues on Friday on a short term contract.
And Baines, speaking at the Fans' Conference event held at Goodison for supporters who have been Season Ticket holders for 10 years or more, explained the German's technical quality could prove to be a real asset.
The left-back said: "He has looked a real top quality player. He has had a great career and a lot of international caps.
"He could be very useful for us, especially if we have the lead and need to keep the ball. We have to be comfortable on the ball and Thomas looks the type to fit into that ideally."
Baines' England colleague Phil Jagielka was also in attendance and he was inevitably asked about the Blues' chances in next week's Merseyside derby.
"We can't really think about Liverpool too much yet," he insisted. "We know we will be above them come the game and it would be an nice time to put one over on them.
"We have got four, five, six players who you would have a good bet on to be a goalscorer in any game.
"That makes a massive difference, if we concede a goal we go for the jugular and try and get one back."
As well as hearing from Baines and Jagielka the Evertonians in attendance were able to take part in Q and A sessions with chief executive Robert Elstone and legend Graeme Sharp.
