Jags Keeps England In Pole

Defender plays full 1-1 draw in Warsaw as Lions stay top of group.

Jags Keeps England In Pole

Phil Jagielka helped England maintain their unbeaten World Cup qualification campaign with a 1-1 draw with Poland on Wednesday afternoon.

The Everton defender played the full 90 minutes in Warsaw, with the contest originally due to take place on Tuesday.

A waterlogged pitch caused the game to be postponed, but less than 24 hours later the two nations finally locked horns.

Jagielka's club colleague Leighton Baines was forced to be an unused substitute for the game, with manager Roy Hodgson favouring Chelsea counterpart Ashley Cole.

Poland started the brighter side - and could consider themselves unlucky to go behind on 32 minutes.

Former Everton striker Wayne Rooney met Steven Gerrard's corner and found the net via a combination of his head and shoulder.

The hosts continued to press, with Jagielka tasked with silencing clinical Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

And their possession and attacking play finally reaped a reward on 70 minutes when, from a corner of their own, the Poles hit back to make it 1-1.

Karim Glik beat former Everton defender Joleon Lescott in the air and headed past a stranded Joe Hart into a gaping goal.

Hodgson made changes in an attempt to restore the Three Lions' lead, with Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replacing Rooney but neither side could add a second goal in the capital.

The result keeps England top of Group H with eight points from four games.
