Magic Numbers: Swansea

Saturday's showdown previewed with stats and figures.

Magic Numbers: Swansea

Everton head to the Liberty Stadium on Saturday as they look for a return to winning ways against Swansea.

Here we preview the trip to South West Wales with the aid of stats, facts and numbers...

0The number of victories by Swansea in the 15 matches played against the Toffees in all competitions, making the Welsh side statistically our favourite opponents, with 11 games won and four drawn.

2The number of animals that stopped play at different times during our 2-1 over Swansea at Goodison in March 1952. A small black terrier interrupted proceedings in the first half by dribbling with the match ball, while the second period witnessed the appearance of a sleek black cat on the pitch, which disappeared by leaping athletically over the gates at the Gwladys Street End.

Dai DaviesGoalkeeper Dai Davies played for both Everton and Swansea.

3Players signed by Everton from the Welsh side. The most recent was goalkeeper Dai Davies in 1970. The Welsh international later returned to Swansea and played in all four league games the sides played against each other from 1981 to 1983.

6Goals scored by 1950s forward John Willie Parker against the Swans, more than any other Everton player in the fixture.

7Draws for the Toffees in their last 11 Premier League away matches, with two defeats and two victories, one of which was at Swansea in March.

10Years since Everton last played a league fixture on this date, losing 3-2 at Aston Villa in the 2002/03 campaign. That season also saw Swansea preserve their Football League status with a victory on the final day.

Bob LatchfordStriker Bob Latchford scored against Swansea for Everton, before later joining the Welsh side.

25 The number of minutes that separated the first and last goals scored at Goodison by legendary strikers Graeme Sharp and Bob Latchford. In our 3-1 win over Swansea in December 1981, the young Scot found the net with a header after 50 minutes before 'the Latch' scored a consolation 15 minutes from time.

37The number of seconds it took Nigel Stevenson to put through his own net in our 3-0 victory at Swansea in October 1982 – the fastest own goal by an opposing player in our history.

49Goals scored in matches between the two clubs. Everton have netted 37 of those, Swansea 12.

82Years since the teams first locked horns, in the old second division in September 1930. Everton won 5-1 and also triumped 5-2 in the return game. Not surprisingly, Dixie Dean was among the goals, the great man netting twice in both matches.

6,998Number of league goals scored by Everton in their history.  The 6,000th goal was scored by Mark Ward in a 2-1 win at Southampton on New Year’s Day 1992.
