Scott Fires England To Euros

Midfielder on target as Lionesses qualify for 2013 tournament.

Scott Fires England To Euros

Jill Scott helped England Women secure their place at next summer's European Championship Finals with a goal against Croatia on Wednesday evening.

The Everton Ladies midfielder opened the scoring as the Lionesses ran out 3-0 winners in Walsall, while fellow Blue Toni Duggan was handed her senior international debut.

England required victory to ensure they would top their qualifying group and pick up an automatic spot for the competition in Sweden. Anything else could have seen the need to navigate a play-off round as runners-up.

And as early as the 21st minute, Scott had handed Hope Powell's side the lead when she was in the right place to tap home a rebound from close range.

Arsenal’s Rachel Yankey provided the assist for the second just after the interval, feeding a pass inside the box to Eniola Aluko, who duly fired home with the outside of her right foot.

With 10 minutes to go, skipper Casey Stoney notched England's third by drilling Karen Carney's cutback past goalkeeper Doris Bacic.

Scott was joined in the starting 11 by Everton teammate Fara Williams, while 21-year old Duggan made her senior bow by coming on as a 79th-minute substitute.

The striker could have even capped her night with a dream goal as the game drew to a close, but instead saw her effort saved by Bacic.

The result completed England’s unbeaten qualifying campaign of two draws and six wins and cemented top spot above the Netherlands in Group Six.

Coach Powell's side were runners-up at Euro 2009, and will be looking to go one better when they head to Sweden in July.

Meanwhile, Everton Ladies return to domestic action on Sunday with a trip to face Lincoln.

The Toffees are currently in a three-way battle for a place in the Champions League - with the final rounds of fixtures set to determine which side finishes as runners-up in the WSL.

The Blues' season comes to an exciting conclusion on Sunday 7 October when fourth-placed Bristol Academy are the visitors to the Arriva Stadium.
