David Moyes hopes Ross Barkley's loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday will make a man of the Everton youngster.

Barkley joined Wednesday on Friday and was immediately thrust into action as a second half substitute as the Owls lost 3-0 at Brighton.

The highly-rated midfielder has only managed a handful of senior appearances for the Toffees and Moyes believes the chance to secure regular action at a high level will prove invaluable.

The Everton manager said: "We hope it improves his development. I think he's ready now for 'men's football'. You've got to remember he's only 18-years-old.

"He missed a lot of football already. We tried to get him a lot of games with the youth team, the reserve team and bits of first-team football at the right time, but the chance to get him some regular football is more important for his long-term development.

"He's not ready to play regularly for us just now, so it's a good chance for him to go and make some mistakes and learn. Sheffield Wednesday are a big club with a big support which is what he'll need to be used to when he comes back to Everton."

Moyes admitted he thought long and hard about sending Barkley out on loan but in the end some successful 'case studies‘ helped him reach a decision.

"I actually think we're a little bit short in the squad at the moment, so the one thing that is paining me a little bit is that I do think we are letting him out when we're short,” he said.

"But I had to weigh up whether I could take that gamble and I just remember the likes of Leon Osman going out on loan to Carlisle and Derby before he came back and played for us. And in my own career when I was a player at Preston, David Beckham came and played for us. It does happen.

“We are a bit short, but hopefully we won't feel the effect of losing Ross too much."
