Pienaar Backs Malaria Campaign

South Africa captain offers support to United Against Malaria.

Pienaar Backs Malaria Campaign

Steven Pienaar is backing a campaign to encourage African citizens to protect themselves from malaria.

The South African international has joined a host of stars from the world of sport, entertainment and politics to support United Against Malaria during the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

United Against Malaria utilises the popularity of African football to deliver educational messages about malaria prevention and treatment to football fans across Africa.

At Finch Farm last month, Pienaar spent time recording life-saving malaria messages for adverts to be broadcast in conjunction with the AFCON games and posed for a series of photographs that will be used on billboards across Africa.

Pienaar is one of many high-profile footballers backing the campaign, including Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o. The players' support will help deliver the all-important message that malaria is completely preventable and treatable with simple tools such as mosquito nets and medicine.

United Against Malaria, which has been named an official social cause of the Africa Cup of Nations by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), aims to reduce the number of deaths caused by malaria in Africa.

The disease causes over 600,000 deaths in Africa alone every year and the majority are children under the age of five.
