Duncan Ferguson enhanced his growing hero status with Everton fans by scoring a thumping winner against Manchester United.

With the Blues having won five in a row at home and United chasing the title, this game was always going to be a tasty encounter.

And so it proved with the Blues putting their guests under much pressure while, at the other end, Neville Southall had plenty of work to get through before claiming a well-earned clean sheet.

The crucial breakthrough came just before the hour mark as Ferguson rose to meet Andy Hinchliffe's  lethal corner delivery.

  • Everton eventually finished 15th, four places and five points above the relegation zone.
  • Royle also led his side to the FA Cup final where they stunned Manchester United to win Everton’s first major silverware in eight years.
  • United also missed out on the Premier League title as they were pipped by Blackburn on the final day.
