Neville Wins Best Goal
Skipper's goal against Baggies wins prize.
Phil Neville
Skipper Phil Neville was a surprise winner of the Goal of the Season prize at the Club’s End of Season Awards – beating teammate Leighton Baines by one vote!
Neville is not known for his goalscoring exploits but when he finds the target they tend to be screamers.
And early on in the season, with his team squeezing past West Brom in the League Cup, Neville cut inside and curled a superb shot into the top corner of the net.
“I was canvassing around the rest of the audience for votes,” joked the skipper.
“My boy is always on at me because I don’t score enough goals so I am really pleased to win it for him.
“I remember Royston went on a dribble and he doesn’t often pass it but he did this time and I connected with it perfectly.”
That was enough to beat off stiff competition from Baines by the narrowest of margins.
In a vote conducted on the night, the audience at St George’s Hall plumped for Neville ahead of the left-back’s exquisite free-kick at Swansea.
Darron Gibson’s winner against Manchester City came in third.
The Everton Goal of the Season Award was sponsored by TW Steel.
Victor TayWell done skipper, a pity we did not win the FA Cup for you as well! Let's do it next season, ok, skip?
