Modest Leighton Baines said he was shocked to be named the Premier League’s top left-back.

The Everton man was included in the PFA team of the season when the annual awards were given out at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Sunday night.

The accolade is reward for another campaign in which the defender has been a paragon of consistency.

Every week Baines has been a man-of-the-match contender for Everton, while he has also added to his tally of England caps.

Despite that, the self-effacing 27-year-old said he wasn’t sure he deserved to get the nod – even if endorsement by his peers comes as welcome recognition.

“I am pleased with it,” he told evertontv. “I did not feel as though I should have been in it to be honest – but am still delighted to be chosen.

“It is picked by the other players so that means a lot.

“It is nice to be recognised in that category of player. Like I say I am not too sure I deserved to be in it but at the same time am delighted to be so. I am not sure I have been the best left-back in the country but if other people think that I have been, then great.

“I am not saying (I have not been consistent). It was just a bit of a surprise to be named in it as there are others I have seen who I feel maybe have done a bit better.”

As for the other awards, Baines said he was happy to see his pick, Robin van Persie, named Player of the Year, while Young Player of the Year, Kyle Walker, has also caught his eye.

“I put Van Persie down as my player of the year,” Baines added. “Kyle Walker has had a fantastic season so I don’t think many people could argue with that, and the team of the year is picked by the other players so that is usually fairly accurate.”

Tickets for Saturday's visit of Fulham are now on general sale. To secure your seat, visit the Park End box office, call 0871 663 1878 or click here.

Simon LahnAshley who? Oh right it's Baines who has been much more consistant both attacking and defending. Well done!

Khal MalikHe played better last season and the year before but was overlooked for the team of the year when he was the best let back in the country. Arguably he was the best again this year.

Stephen ThomasIts a nice trait Leighton, but you are too modest. You got picked on merit. Well done and have a great end to the season with Everton and England. COYB
