Tony Hibbert says the proud scouser in him will make Saturday’s Wembley derby extra special.

Back in 1989 – the last time the Merseyside giants went head to head at the national stadium – an eight-year-old Hibbert sat forlornly in the stands as the Reds prevailed after extra time.

The defender is Blue to the core and he knows just what this FA Cup semi-final means to the city of Liverpool.

“It is massive for the fans and also for a local lad like me,” Hibbert told evertontv.

“It is a big game, a derby, and a derby at Wembley which makes it extra special. It is also a chance to get closer to winning some silverware.

“It does remind everyone of the 80s and obviously I went down to a few of those games with my dad,” he added. “It was great to see Merseyside represented like that.

“It is now a good few years since it has happened, too long, and it is great for the city to have the two clubs back there playing against each other. The scousers will take over down there – it will be madness I am sure!”

Hibbert has jostled with skipper Phil Neville for supremacy at right back and now faces an anxious wait to see if he will get the nod.

"These are the games you look forward to,” he added. “The games you want to play in your career – the big games.

“Playing at Wembley is special and everyone has been putting a shift in to try and get into that team.

“Nobody knows the team. The manager will probably name it on the day, maybe the day before and everyone just has to be fit and ready to play. I don’t think any manager would name the team early. It is most likely to be last minute.”

Despite an abject run of league form since Christmas and the fact they currently sit behind Everton in the table, Liverpool remain favourites with the bookmakers.

Hibbert, however, believes there is nothing to pick between the sides, but he does say there is genuine confidence within the Blues squad.

“They are a very good team and the players they have got are unbelievable,” he added. “They have spent a lot of money but the run we have been on shows what we are capable of.

“We are confident. We have shown that in the games we have had. Everyone is feeling confident and looking forward to this one.

“I don’t think there’s much in it, especially as a derby game. Anything can happen when Everton and Liverpool play it is just a massive, massive game.

“We are probably due a win over them and I hope it happens. It is a semi-final but we have to try and ignore all that and just do what it takes to win – that’s all that matters.”
