Moyes' Welcome Headache
Blues boss lauds his in-form defensive trio.
David Moyes has hailed the in-form trio of Sylvain Distin, John Heitinga and Phil Jagielka, saying all three must be given credit for Everton's recent defensive stringency.
The Blues have recorded seven clean sheets in their last 12 games and given away nothing in their last three despite Moyes regularly switching his central rearguard pairing.
“We’ve never been in a situation where rotation has needed to be done because we’ve never really had a backlog of fixtures," said the manager. "But we have had for the last three weeks.
"Now I have got three centre-halves who are playing very well. I’ve got one who plays for Holland who are ranked number two in the world, I’ve got one who plays for England and I’ve got Sylvain Distin who has been fantastic and gives us a natural left footer. So I’ve got real good competition with the form they’re in."
Everton's continuing FA Cup journey contributed to the side having to play eight games in the month of March and Moyes revealed much of his recent tinkering has been out of necessity.
“If people are playing well I will let them continue and keep the jersey," he said. “I think the situation with Distin is age, and Johnny (Heitinga) has not trained as much because of a toe niggle, so it has made it easy to rotate them round. I will use them at the right times. Last week [against Swansea] Jagielka came in and he was top notch and he’s done really well for us too.”
