David Weir feels as if he has ‘come home' after accepting an offer to join the Everton coaching staff.
The former Scottish international made more than 250 appearances for the Blues between 1999 and 2007, establishing himself as a firm favourite at the club.
The 41-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Glasgow Rangers at the turn of the year and, after long being touted for a backroom role at Goodison, returns to Merseyside after five years away.
"It is great to be back," Weir told evertontv. "It feels like coming home again. I had five great years in Glasgow and loved every minute of it but it is nice to be back and even after only a short time it already feels like home.
"The manager has always said there was a role here for me when I finally decided to come back.
“I was always around Finch Farm and kept in touch with him and he has given me this opportunity to help Alan Stubbs and Andy Holden with the reserves.
“I think I was at the stage where it was the right time for me. Hopefully it will develop into a good role and I can spend a lot of time here and learn from good people.
"I am glad to be here and will do whatever the manager requires. I want to pick up bits and pieces and learn, and it is a great place to do that because of the people who are here."
While he has rejoined the club to help coach the reserves, Weir's first job was to turn out at centre-half for the second string in Tuesday afternoon's 1-1 draw in the mini-derby against Liverpool.
But although the defender will retain a playing registration – and is open to the idea of filling in for the reserves – Weir has all but closed the door on adding to his tally of first team appearances.
"I certainly wasn't expecting to be playing 90 minutes immediately upon coming back here," he continued. "But I'm always happy to help out and I enjoyed it. I am happy to help the young players and hopefully they can learn and get better and become Everton players.
"I am just concentrating on this (coaching) at the minute and enjoying it and trying to help out. Hopefully I can help the young lads accelerate their learning and also pick up some coaching experience – that is the primary aim.”
He added: “Of course it is great to see all the old faces, the vast majority of the people are the same and it is a nice feeling to come to Finch Farm and get the welcome I have had. You just want to be a part of it and help the club be successful.”
