Donovan Eyes Perfect Farewell
Cup victory and a goal would crown American's second loan spell.
Landon Donovan is eyeing another perfect ending as the curtain prepares to fall on his second spell in Blue.
Two years ago the American said goodbye to Goodison with a goal in the 5-1 demolition of Hull and the picture of Jack Rodwell hoisting him up in the air and presenting him to the crowd remains an iconic image.
This time round Donovan has again wooed supporters with his superb displays, and perhaps the only thing missing is a crowning goal.
So as he prepares to jet back to Hollywood, the perfect script would surely climax with him firing the Blues into the last eight of the FA Cup in his very last game.
“Of course it would be nice to score,” he told evertontv. “As an attacking player it is always nice to score.
“If we win 1-0 and it is an own goal then I would be happy – as long as we advance in the cup then I am happy – but I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to score.
“Having said that, it does not bother me that I haven’t scored yet,” he added. “I think in an earlier stage of my career it might have done.
“But when you are a part of the team every week then that speaks for itself. If you are in a team of this quality of players and the manager is picking you every week then that is enough.
“Scoring goals has been a big part of my career but as long as I am contributing and the team is doing well then I am happy.”
As for his impending departure, Donovan admits he leaves with mixed emotions.
The love bestowed upon him by supporters is mirrored within the confines of Finch Farm and leaving his home away from home will again be difficult for the LA Galaxy skipper.
"It is bittersweet," he said. "Of course I am excited to go home and see my friends and family and teammates back in LA, but I have only been here a short time and I feel like this is my family too so it is kind of hard to leave that."
