Steven Pienaar has pledged to emulate Landon Donovan by dazzling during his second spell at Everton.

The 29-year-old South African international returned to Goodison Park on Tuesday on loan from Spurs until the end of the season.

A year on from his move to White Hart Lane, the talented midfielder is keen to prove to the Everton faithful he can recapture the form that made him the Blues' Player of the Year in 2010.

Indeed, he wants to do even better.

He told "You could say there is pressure now. People will expect the same stuff. But maybe I can do even better than the last time. It's not going to be easy, I have to fight for my place to get in the starting team first.

"Hopefully I'll have the Donovan effect! You have to look at someone to inspire you and what Donovan has done in the last few games. He's been playing really well and hopefully I can do the same.

"It feels great to be back. I just want to play football and got an opportunity to come back and play. I will definitely take it with both hands."

Indeed, after a frustrating year at Tottenham dogged by niggling injuries and strong competition in his favoured position, Pienaar believes Everton can now benefit from his hunger to play regularly again.

He added: "It was a bad start with a groin injury when I joined (Spurs). It all started and of course I had the operation in the summer and I think that just slowed it down a bit. Hopefully everything is behind me. I've been fit for the last two months.

"I wasn't frustrated. If you get injured, when you get back fit and the team is playing really well - they were unbeaten in something 10 games - you just have to wait for your chance. I was waiting for it, eventually you have to make a decision. It's a personal decision. I just want to play football. I'm not getting younger so I just had a word with the manager and we eventually came to terms that I could go and play somewhere else."

And Everton was the perfect destination. Indeed, Pienaar makes no secret of his passion for the Club and the camaraderie he still enjoys with the players in the dressing room.

He continued: "I've been following the Club quite closely. I've been speaking to the players a lot as well.

"They gave me a bit of banter when I came in, but I was expecting it. Everyone's happy, I'm happy as well. It wasn't a difficult decision to make.

"I've been speaking to the players a lot and when the manger gave me a call on Tuesday, it made things much easier. It's important you don't have to go somewhere where you still have to get used to the people."
