Youngsters Held By Potters

Everton’s Under-18s threw away a 2-0 lead as they eventually drew 2-2 with Stoke City at Finch Farm on Saturday morning.

The Blues went in front with a freakish own goal when a Stoke defender’s clearance caught the wind and looped over his own keeper.

An Anton Forrester strike saw the Blues go in 2-0 in front at the break, but a debatable penalty got Stoke back in it, before they equalised midway through the second period.

“It really was a game of two halves,” said Sheedy. “It was played in very windy conditions which made it hard for us to pass it about as we usually do.

“But we settled down better than them and even though the own goal was a bit of a fluke, we deserved to be in front at half-time.

“Despite us being 2-0 up, though, I knew the game wasn’t over, but they pulled one back with a penalty when the referee said there had been a pull in the area. Then we didn’t deal with a long throw and they managed to scramble it in.”

The Under-18s now head to London on Thursday for the FA Youth Cup fourth-round tie with Queens Park Rangers.

“It will be a good test,” said Sheedy. “We’re all looking forward to it.”
