Moyes Frustrated By Cup Exit
Gaffer on Chelsea defeat.
Everton manager David Moyes was disappointed to see his side's Carling Cup campaign come to an end against Chelsea following a 2-1 extra-time defeat at Goodison Park.
Daniel Sturridge scored the decisive goal in the 116th minute in an incident packed affair which saw both teams finish the game with 10 men and squander a penalty.
Salomon Kalou got the Chelsea opener after Nicolas Anelka had missed from the spot and Louis Saha scored his 10th career goal against the West London club after Leighton Baines was denied from the spot by Petr Cech as goalkeeper Ross Turnbull was sent off.
Royston Drenthe then saw red for the Blues in extra time before Sturridge's winner. Moyes says Everton should have made their numerical advantage count more in normal time.
He said: "It was a game we probably should have won in the end and we'll probably come away from it a wee bit disappointed that we didn't go into the next round of the cup.
"We want to do well in the cup competitions and the players did that - they tried really hard tonight.
"We hadn't really given Chelsea a game a week or so at Stamford Bridge but we gave them a game tonight.
"We tried to make it as hard as we could for them and up to 90 minutes we should have won the game."
The hosts were forced to withdraw captain Phil Neville at half time and Moyes confirmed he and Tim Cahill have both picked up injuries.
"Tim was carrying and injury through the game and Phil has a hamstring injury so we've got one or two doubts," revealed Moyes
"But that's what it's like and that's why the good teams can play midweek and Saturday and keep winning because they have a good squad of players and hopefully we were able to show that as well."
