Reserves manager Alan Stubbs heaped praise on January signing Apostolos Vellios after the striker set up both goals in the Blues’ 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Vellios, 19, used his physical presence to tee up both Adam Forshaw and Conor McAleny with astute link-up play to give Everton a 2-0 half time lead.

The Greek forward had gone into the game having scored three goals in his last four outings but Stubbs told evertonfc.com this was his best performance to date.

"For me it was the best he's been since he's come to the Club. He looked more of an all-round player," he said.

"In the past he's done some good individual stuff but then done something a little bit sloppy.

"He was more complete tonight, he did the difficult things well and he was starting to do the simple things better.

"That was very pleasing, probably the biggest plus of the night for me."

“He's a big lad, he's about 6ft 3ins/ 4ins but he's got a good touch, he's good feet for a big fella and he's been scoring a few goals which is good for his confidence.”

After the break Everton failed to hang on to their advantage, spending much of the second period penned in their own half.

Spanish midfielder Suso and Nikola Saric notched to secure a point for the Reds, and Stubbs was disappointed with the nature of the goals they conceded.

"In the second half we said it was important to start well, and I think we started okay," said Stubbs.

"Then we've just shot ourselves in the foot a bit with the goals that we've conceded.

"The lad has finished the first one well, but he's all left foot and he's only going to put it in one place and that's the disappointing thing.

"The second goal, we gave it away cheaply on the edge of our box, and even then we could have done something about," he added.

"Overall I'm happy with the performances and the fact we're scoring goals, I'm not with the fact that we're conceding too many."
