Capital Date For Blues

Club confirms friendly with top MLS club DC United

Capital Date For Blues

Everton will play a pre-season friendly in the American capital city this summer.

The Blues have today confirmed they will take on the Washington-based DC United on Saturday, July 23.

The friendly will be the first of two games the Toffees hope to play stateside as part of their pre-season schedule.

Kevin Payne, President & CEO of the MLS side, said: “DC United take pride in measuring our club against the best clubs worldwide. In Everton, we have yet another world-class opponent visiting RFK Stadium. Our respect for their organization is deep and we look forward to hosting them this summer.”

DC United began their MLS campaign last Saturday with a 3-1 win against Columbus Crew in front of 18,000 at the RFK Stadium.

Coached by former USA international Ben Olsen, the ‘Black-and-Red’ are the most successful side in MLS history and will provide tough opposition for Everton - a challenge David Moyes is relishing.

“We’re looking forward to going back to America,” he said. “We’ve been a few times now and the facilities are always first-class. We’ve not yet been to Washington as a club so we’re really looking forward to the game against DC United.

“It will be one of our first games of the summer and it’s good that it will be against quality opposition. The RFK is a terrific stadium and I am sure we’ll all enjoy the experience.”

The current DC United squad includes Brazilian midfielder Fred and USA internationals Charlie Davies and Josh Wolff. They have previously been represented by the likes of Hristo Stoichkov, Marcelo Gallardo and Marco Etcheverry.

Tim Howard knows the outfit well, of course, having faced them many times during his stay at New York Metro Stars.

“I’m really looking forward to playing at the RFK again,” he said. “It’s a stadium I know well and DC United is a club I know well. They’ve been successful in the States over the years and it will be great to play against them with Everton. It will be an important part of our pre-season preparation and it will be the type of tough test that we want.

“I know the Head Coach, Ben Olsen, very well of course having played alongside him so many times for the national team and he was a great player who I am sure will be a terrific coach for DC. There’s a lot of football still to be played here in the Premier League but I’m already looking forward to playing my pals at DC!”

The match at the RFK (Robert F Kennedy Memorial Stadium) will kick-off at 7.30pm (USA time) and ticket details will be announced once the hosts have confirmed them.
