Jags Not Ruled Out Yet

Outside chance defender could face Birmingham.

Jags Not Ruled Out Yet
Phil Jagielka

David Moyes has not completely ruled out Phil Jagielka featuring for Everton on Boxing Day.

Reports this week said the defender would be out until the new year with a thigh strain but Moyes has not yet struck him from the squad to face Birmingham on Sunday.

John Heitinga is also a doubt with his ongoing knee problem, meaning there is a potential selection problem in central defence.

But the manager has the opposite problem in midfield, with Mikel Arteta back from suspension and Steven Pienaar also in with a chance of returning from his groin problem.

Victor Anichebe misses the game through suspension following his red card at Manchester City on Monday.

Moyes said at his press conference on Thursday: "We have got the returning Mikel Arteta and possibly Steven Pienaar back from injury as well so we will have plenty to choose from and it could be a difficult decision.

"I'm not sure about Jags, we are hoping he might not be out too long. He is certainly a doubt for the Birmingham game, as is Johnny Heitinga, so we could have a problem at centre half.

"Hopefully they won't be out for any length of time."

The manager was also able to report that Everton's training schedule has not been disrupted by the waeather this week, with undersoil heating at Finch Farm meaning preparations could continue as normal.

Moyes also ruled out an early return from loan for Joseph Yobo. The terms of his temporary deal with Fenerbahce do not permit such a move.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Neville, Jagielka, Distin, Heitinga, Baines, Coleman, Fellaini, Rodwell, Cahill, Arteta, Osman, Pienaar, Bilyaletdinov, Saha, Beckford, Yakubu, Gueye.

Grant BellI think we're all forgetting Rodwell can migrate to centre back if needed.

stephen greencan't believe we all want yobo back, nearly everyone said he was rubbish last season. The oversight is not selling a buying someone new. Weater or Taylor a must in Jan. Young, english and cheap!

Philip SmytheHibbo at centre back???!!! Are you mad, la? Got to be the skipper. Love Tony, as he's EVERTON through and through, but he showed he can't play centre half in Europe the other year. Carl Ellis made at good point about Yobo. What was wrong with our team having 4 excellent centre backs? Other top sides have replacements for every position, why not us? Competition for places and all that. This could be a repeat of last year. Get Joseph back now or bring in a talented youngster in the new year. Don't think Duffy is ready yet. I think Billy needs to show us what he can do as well. Step up lad!!

Alec WalkerMaybe we should take note of our supporter experts and play 4-6-3, we should beat everybody then !!!!

Mikel ArreguiHope Jags can play but if he can't we have Nev, Hibbo, Rodders who's played there before or even Duffy. But not Heitinag please, if anything we saw on Monday we need committed people.

john hugillWhat is it with everyone saying possitive things about billy. He is rubbish yes we have had some bad performances from othere players but billy is rubbish every chance he gets, gives us nothing at all, to weak, cant pass, cant score, just dont see anything he brings us.

Joseph GrahamThe team played really well against Man City - because we start games very quickly against top clubs. Lets do the same quick start against Birmingham and put them under pressure from the start. It would be a mistake to expect a win - you have to put the effort in and add the quality on top to get the right result and deserve the win. I hope Arteta starts fast and gets back to his usual standard as it should win us the game. COYB

Carl EllisThis is the sort of time when I wonder why Mr.Yobo is currently playing his football for a Turkish side. What an oversight to not have a suitable clause to allow his return for such occurences.... Bad Management Yobo is a natural centre half and at his age should be at the top of his game... What a farce that he is sent out on loan rather than being available for selection. If he has no place in the team.... SELL HIM! at least the money could be invested in other players i.e. Mr Pienaar's (greedy money grabbing?) wage demands... speaking of which, for a player so highly regarded by so many suitors, does it not occur to the management to give him what he wants and on a long term deal (and then sell him anyway for £££!) rather than just allow him to walk away on a free???.... maybe I should take over Mr Kenwrights duties for a while.

Philip SmytheOh yeah, forgot he might be injured. My comment still stands though. Need to stop playing him in midfield and more at the back. Maybe we could try 5-3-2 when everyone is back fit. If the boss want to get it tight then lets just have Mikel (or Rodwell), Stevie & Fellaini (or the Capt.) in midfield with Tim & Becks upfront. Mustard and Leighton could attack from the wings. 4-5-1 is just not working! Worth a go at this point.

Philip SmytheI say give Johnny a go at the back. That's where he wants to play and where he's best. Give Phil a week off to work on his passing. He gives the ball away far too much in dangerous areas.

Michael RutherfordI only ever seen Rodweel have one good match, that was against united where he only played the last 20 minutes. Will Felli be able to perform like he did against city every week. I say we give felli a chance in the holding role and therefore give arteta license to get forward. Ossie/Bily/Pienaar/Coleman on the two wings with Cahill playing off either the Yak or Saha. Hope Jags is fit for Sunday coz our defense looks settled now.

Martin WeeksI for One Would Like To See Gueye And Billy Playing Give Them A Chance To Show What The Got. Opposite Not Sure What They Like. So Give Em Ago. Coleman Has Really Impressed This Season But Needs A Rest Every Now And Then. IMWT

karl kooi thought rodwell was terrible going forward against city even in the first 20 minutes when we where attacking more than they where and as for putting him in defense surely the best option for the back four would be hibbert, neville, distin and baines and if you ask me peinaar and arteta where what we where missing against city we spent about 60 minutes of that game defending and i know saha and yak havent had a goal scoring edge this season but there still better options than beckford and anichebe. for me its got to be saha, cahill, pienaar, fellaini, arteta, coleman, hibbert, neville, distin, baines and howard. coyb

Real ToffeeThere's no problem, stick with the team that won at Man City. Fellaini and Rodwell deserved their place in the middle. Pienaar and Arteta need to learn they're not automatic choices anymore.

Thursday 23rd December 15:51 Report Comment

John CullyPut Jack Rodwell in defense. Surely he is experienced enough now, to be able to drop back to his natural position.

Thursday 23rd December 15:19 Report Comment

Armin H.R.I hope that Pienaar will not play, because we are winning largely without him .. and if he refuses to sign the new contract does not deserve to play a minute more!

Thursday 23rd December 15:13 Report Comment

Simon AllenIt would b good if our rock at the back was fit 2 play. We need him so we can string a few wins together now. NSNO
