Brown Off As England Reach World Cup

Four Everton players helped England Ladies qualify for the World Cup finals.

Leading 2-0 from the first leg, England beat Switzerland 3-2 in Wohlen despite having Everton keeper Rachel Brown controversially sent off in the second half.

Blues midfielder Fara Williams was also on the scoresheet, netting the third goal from the penalty spot to secure the win after Kelly Smith and Eni Aluko had given their side a 4-0 aggregate lead.

Brown was dismissed after Switzerland had scored a consolation goal, the keeper was seeminlgly the victim of play acting from goalscorer Ramona Bachmann, who claimed she had been struck while retrieving the ball from the back of the net.

Rachel Unitt and Jill Scott also played the full 90 minutes for Hope Powell's side, who will now focus on next summer's tournament in Germany.

Afterwards Powell said: "It's quite evident that she dived. It was bizarre but it had the desired effect.

"It's a shame it happened, but that's not the way to go about playing football and we have to appeal."
