Study Says Blues Were Real Champions!
Everton were top of the 2009/10 Financial Fair Play league.
A new study has hailed Everton as the real champions of the Premier League in the 2009/10 season!
That is the finding of a university study which has put together a Financial Fair Play league.
The research, carried out by Dr Sue Bridgwewater from the University of Warwick, balances teams' performance over the 2009/10 season against their financial circumstances.
It was based on a formula which takes into account wages and transfer expenditure in relation to points gathered, with the Blues coming out top of the league.
David Moyes' men come out ahead of Blackburn, Arsenal and Tottenham in the standings. In contrast, Manchester City, Liverpool and West Ham would have been in the relegation zone.
The research was suggested by The Times, with their chief football correspondent Patrick Barclay writing: "The findings are very much in line with the view of managers of how Barlcays Premier League clubs are run.
"If football were anything to do with fairness, Goodison Park would have been a blue sea of celebration at the end of last season and David Moyes a champion manager."
Dr Bridgewater has written several books on football business and runs a course for current and aspiring managers at the University of Warwick.
The 2009/10 Financial Fair Play League looked like this:
1 |
Everton |
2 |
Blackburn Rovers |

Sarah HowardWe have actually won something at last HOORAY! We may not have financial means, but we are not in debt, we finish in the top 6 every year, we have some top class players, we play attractive football. We don't want to end up like Man City, spending 200m on rubbish like Silva (Who was rubbish at Valencia) or Robinho (rubbish at Real Madrid). I get excited in the transfer window, Man City fans don't (with their overpaid primadonnas).

stephen lathamMy God there are some pointless jobs out there.
Saturday 4th September 12:21 Report CommentSimon WitneyThe point of this is that it shows that Managers need to think wisely on who they buy, not just throw money around and pay high wages. *Hint Man City* This report is more use to club managers more than us fans for highlighting the need for proper research into a player the manager is potentially interested in and making them think if buying the player is actually going to help their club.

Friday 3rd September 22:48 Report CommentNeil SteeleCarl, you may laugh, but I sat through those times and never felt as disheartened as I do now! The frustration now, being as close as we are to actually achieving something - yet completely wasting that chance - it's incomparably mind bending.

brennan finneganEverton FC and David Moyes will always be top of this table if financial spending is taken into account as we dont spend very much each year. I would prefer being down a few places knowing wed spent say 10mill on a good striker. In doing so we could be challenging for a top place in the real league

Chris BannantyneI always suspected as much, so I am not surprised by these findings at all. I am, however, a little surprised at how high up Gunners got, and am tickled pink that Liverpool are relegated. However Id love to win the real deal. Would be fantastic to get some more money in, not man city squillions, but enough to allow Moyes to prove to all the doubters just how good he is. In reality, I don't think it would take many millions.

Mikel ArreguiOh where do I have to sign for that table to be the final one this season! It's fantastic at the top and the bottom! hahaha I think we should show this everywhere to potential investors, it's the best proof they can have of how good their investement would turn out to be! They would have a huge profit, and that's what they look for at the end of the day... It should be shown everywhere, I really think it can benefit us a lot. And of course, it shows the ace Moyes is as we all know. COYB! IMWT!
