Ossie Deserves Credit
The assistant boss explains why Ossie is an unsung hero.
Leon Osman
Leon Osman deserves greater recognition for his influence on and off the field for Everton.
That is the verdict of Blues' assistant boss Steve Round, who was delighted to see the 29-year-old score as captain in Wednesday night's impressive 5-1 demolition of Huddersfield Town.
Youngsters Seamus Coleman, Magaye Gueye, Jack Rodwell and Marouane Fellaini may have earned the headlines after the second round success but the influence of Osman is not under-estimated by the Club's coaching staff.
Round explained: "Leon's a terrific player and the heart and soul of the Club, he really is. He was deservedly the captain on Wednesday night.
"I think sometimes he doesn't quite get the credit he deserves because he hasn't got the flashness of one or two of the others in some of his play. But he does the work, he's got great quality and I was really pleased with him tonight."
Osman is one of the Club's longest serving players. A product of the Everton Academy, he overcame a succession of serious injuries early in his career to emerge as a key first-team player for David Moyes, making his senior debut in 2004.
He has since become a lynchpin of the Everton squad, making 210 senior starts and netting 34 goals, the most recent coming in Wednesday night's win at Goodison.

M ByrneI'm not sure how much he does of the pitch but on the pitch osman doesn't do enough, he's small, weak and slow albeit he has a decent first touch but he definatley isn't a winger and yet we keep putting him out wide on the right?

JONATHAN SPITERIPity there are a lot of English players that play in the same position as him, as he could have played for England. And who knows maybe he will in the near future.

Graeme TierneyWhat's with all this "If we want to get into the top four, then Osman isn't good enough" nonsense? Without players like Ossie and Hibbert, a squad doesn't have a soul and won't get into the top four. They don't have to be the best players in the squad, they just need to demonstrate the effort required to the other players. I've said before that with the quality that we now have in midfield, I don't expect Osman to play quite as often, but I don't believe anyone of those players can match him for workrate. He does have quality too. He's just a victim of his size more than anything

Eddy Carey JnrI am sorry but i cant agree with this! Osman is an average player which means he isn't good enough for us anymore (thats if we want to aim for 4th and win silverware.) For me he losses the ball far too often due to sloppy passing and being to small and weak! If anyone wants to buy him i think we should sell (I think 4mill+.)

Paul HowellsI am a big fan of Ossie, he is a great technical footballer, quick footed and a good footballing brain. But at the same time I do think if we are going to progress to a top four challenging team then we do need to bring in players of better quality. Like I say I do really like Leon but I think as with Tony Hibbert the team and the squad have outgrown them now and for the future we need to be looking at brining in players of an even higher standard. It will be almost impossible to find players of a better standard and also with Ossie and Hibbo's love for the club, but that is the challenge that we face now. Still, I hope Leon (and Tony) go on to get Testimonials after a couple more years loyal service and both will be fully deserved.

Mikel ArreguiI agree, Ossie is a great assett to this club, he's Everton 100% and always gives it all for the club and never whines when he's on the bench. Same goes to Hibbo!
Friday 27th August 15:35 Report CommentSammy OwenLeon is awesome, no doubt about it at all. He's our Steve Gerrard (and by that I don't mean he's an arrogant punchdrunk koppite!) Here's to many more times skippering the side Ossie!

Michael QuarryTotally agree, Ossie is a great player and a true blue. His contibution shouldn't be underestimated and I feel he has been very unlucky not to break into the national team.

Robert BerryOssie is to Everton what Paul Scholes is to Man Utd. A Truly great servant to the club. 110% Everton. Very unlucky not to have had some international recognition during his career. I suspect his career is past it's peak now and over the next two or three seasons his appearances will be more and more restricted as some of the youngsters come through - but what a great asset to have in reserve when needed due to injuries etc.
