Boss Urges Coleman Patience

Moyes on getting the best out of Seamus Coleman.

Everton boss David Moyes is determined to be patient with Seamus Coleman as the Irish Under-21 international continues his development as a senior squad player.

Coleman earned rich praise for his second-half showing in the victory over Huddersfield on Wednesday.

But whilst Moyes understands why the defender's play has captured the imagination of fans, he is also aware of the areas of his defensive game that need to be honed.

Moyes told evertonfc.com: "The age of a player doesn't matter, you should be looking at the last performance. If they are good enough and playing well enough, then I will put them in. It comes down to my decision. I thought Jack Rodwell played very well the other night. I thought Seamus, in the first half, was very poor. He gave away the goal and nearly led to another goal.

"But his performance in the second half improved. They are the things I have to tell the players and I told Seamus at half-time and his performance picked up no end in the second half. But Jack was solid all the way through.

"Having said that, Jack played something like 25 games for us last season and was a regular in the squad. He is always there or thereabouts."

Seamus is fast emerging as a player with huge potential, as his loan spell at Blackpool in the latter stages of last term illustrated.

And his ability to learn is going to be important in the months ahead.

Moyes added: "Seamus processed what was said to him at half-time and showed what he should have been doing and he made sure he forced the winger to defend rather than him having to defend all the time in the second half.

"Seamus has a long-term future at Everton without a doubt. Whether it is on Sunday is a different matter."

Samuel HughesPut him right midfield then! Better than Billy on the right or any other until you get rid of Yak and buy Donovan. I agree he needs to work on his defensive abilities. But is heitinga not a world cup runner up right back? And please, please leave someone on the half way line when defending corners or explain why you dont please. It would relieve the stadium of alot of groans. wish i could see the training IMWT

James RookeHibbert has been a great servant to this club over the years but now is the time that Moyes needs to take a risk with Coleman. I admit that he is a little suspect at the back but then again so is Hibbo and he is miles better going forward. Teams like Man Utd became amazing by taking risk on the young lad and we need to do the same with Coleman and Rodwell. Them 2 lads can play without fear.

DAVE HUNTERPeople only seem to notice/remember mistakes by Hibbert or Neville, but forget we only lost 2 game after christmas last season with 1 or the other playing right back, they must have been doing something right!!! Colemans time will come but for now get off Hibbert/Nevilles back

chris skillicornI have to say I am getting a little tired of hearing we have to be patient with Coleman, WHY DO WE!!!!! Moyes says he makes mistakes?!?!? Fair point but how many games has Hibbert and Neville cost us in that position, atleast this lad can win a game with his crossing etc, dont get me wrong I love Phil and Tony but if Moyes is really saying that he won't start Coleman because he makes mistakes then he really needs to look a bit closer as to what the alternative is, as far as I am concerened I would rather have coleman on the pitch as atleast he can make amends for any mistake he makes!!

Dave O'NeillC'mon Davie, think about it our attacking threat at the moment down the right is non existent, Osman is anonymous there. Hibbert and Neville can't cross a ball to save their lives. Why was Donavan such a hit last season, because we actually had an answer to the right midfield position for a while. After all the new players that have come in over the last few seasons, we are still yet to buy a right sided player. Now Coleman looks the best right midfield attacking option we have at our disposal, why do u think so many fans are calling for his inclusion. It just seems simple logic to put him in there

mike noakesIt,s going to be an interesting seaeson for Moyes. He has so far been brilliant with a "backs to the wall" depleted squads. He now has to cope with a squad where we have class players competing for places, and so has coices and decisions to make. I am a big fan of Mr. Moyes but am worried about his tendency to be negative, and play safe. If we want to win anything we have to open things up. Personally I was worried about how long it took him to give Jags the nod over Yobo, when for me Jags was clearly the better player. The same holds true for Baines who was kept out of the side by Lescott at left back. Neville and Hibbert still have much to offer but they are not game changers, they will not win matches for us, so I'd go with coleman. The idea that Rodwell still needs to be nurtured is nonsense, he has aready proved himself at all levels ,and against the toughest opposition. I am not looking for a "gung-ho" approach but it is now time that we gave our most accomplished players a decent run in the first team. It's the only way we will challenge for the top spots this year and ,more importantly, in years to come.

stephen jenkinsI agree with a few comments. Coleman right wing, Neville's time is up and i'm also still haunted with Hibberts cup final perfomance. Maybe bit early for Coleman, but he's got to play Rodwell now. He's more than ready.

Neil SteeleThese comments say one thing to me; Taxi for Moyes. Complete and utter joke. Way to wreck a young players confidence with completely unfounded criticism. Same old Davie, negative to the death.

liam munroI BELIEVE MOYES SHOULD LOOK AT PLAYING MUSTARD RIGHT WING MORE THAN RIGHT BACK AT THE MOMENT. GOING FORWARD THIS KID IS ..... WELL HE'S JUST MUSTARD BUT HE DOES JUST LACK A LITTLE GOING THE OTHER WAY. SO I TINK PLAY HIM ON THE WING LET HIM LEARN THE ART OF TEARING DEFFENDERS TO BITS WHILE AT THE SAME TIME LEARN OF HIBBO OR NEV WHO WOULD BE JUS BEHIND HIM. BUT TO BE FAIR THE LAD IS GUNA HAVE TO WORK HIS NUTS OF TO 1 GET IN THE 1ST 11 AND 2 STAY THERE.

Nathan Cowleyidiots, hibbert is not half as bad as some make him out to be, i would much prefer a decent defending FB to a great attacking one. Coleman is a hot prospect, and i fully agree with what moye sis doing with him. He is still a young lad and has a lot to learn about the premiership. The way some people speak you would think they would be a professional manager, let alone the manager of the 4th biggest club in england like moyes!

Jeffrey Stuart KirkhamI'd still play him before Hibbert!!! Hibbert's ball distribution is awful & I'm still haunted by his shocker in the FA cup final!!! Malouda terrorised him. Give Coleman a chance & I'm sure he'll repay the faith!!!

William James Bradshawdavie if you dont think you can trust coleman yet its got to be hibbert at right back for now, i know you will not like this but its time for nevile to be phased out of the team now

Sydney RobertsSeamus should play right midfield on sunday with phil neville behind him. Yes he's out of position but so would Osman (CM) or Bilyaletinov (AML). In the long term his position is obviously full back but right now we need pace and goals Seamus is the man for that! IMWT

Friday 27th August 19:10 Report Comment

John HauWell, in that case Coleman better learn something from Baines, when it comes to defending after going up supporting attack, won't learn too much from Neville and Hibbert when it comes to that side of things, although Neville was not bad at it when he was still in a his prime years at Man Utd. Any way with Villa are doing this badly I see no reason why we can't play Coleman and Rodwell, so play them on Sunday we will come away with 3 points, other wise I can see us coming out with a draw if we are lucky! Not trying to be negative but we needed someone with pace on the right as well as on the left, as Anichebe not available which leave us with little option but to play Coleman, unless we are planning to play Rodwell as a RM, he wasn't too bad last time when he came on for us playing in that position, just avoid playing Osman in RM, he is the last person I wanted to see playing in that position.

Colin HafezI agree with David Moyes re Coleman's defensive shortcomings, he is not the finished article, but his attacking qualities cause havac to opposing defences, look at the spurs game last season, why not use him as an attacking right-sided midfielder, we turned Gosling from full-back to midfield, the has has everything, cross with either foot, not hit and hope like some, he can get into the box and cause havac, he could be another Donavan!

willie kellyput him in right midfield, haha, sure why not prob do better than anyone in the squad is in that position right now!!

Friday 27th August 17:29 Report Comment

Michael Liptroti argued the point seeing him at blackpool last year that hes a right winger more than a right back.. struggled in the championship to defend but coming forward he looks the part!

Malcolm BubbHmmm, such stern words are unusual and make me think Coleman is definitely in on Sunday!!! DM just trying to get him in a disciplined frame of mind, I think.

CRAIG WEILDINGExactly what i have said all along. He needs to get a better defensive minded football brain. And obviously cos he is young he is raw. He might make a couple of errors that cost us. It might be he would be a better midfielder. Trust me i think he will be a star for us.

Paul HowellsHarsh words by Davey, but true. It is clear to see Colemans attacking threat but I watched him in the play-offs for Blackpool last season and once he was forward he didnt get back quick enough if they lost the ball and was caught out of position. That said, he wont learn and improve his defending without game time. I would still like to see him play this season, possibly as a right mid with either Hibbo or Pip Neville behind him as a bit of added security. Then again, he wont learn to defend if he is playing right wing will he?

Friday 27th August 15:28 Report Comment

Adam LaffoleyI'm sorry Mr Moyes, but if we want goals, which is something we've been lacking as of late, then your boy Seamus has got to be in the team it's as simple as that!!! Obviously he needs to work on his defensive game - even experienced wing backs need to do that (G Johnson comes to mind) but I'm confident he'll do the job on Sunday especially as Villa are leaking goals at the moment and Coleman will help keep that trend up!! COYB!!
