Jack Rodwell says he is happy to bide his time in his search for a regular starting spot.

The teenager started his first game of the season on Wednesday, scoring as Everton beat Huddersfield 5-1 in the Carling Cup.

But the battle for a central midfield berth is intense and Rodwell acknowledges that he is not assured a place in the team at Aston Villa on Sunday.

"I know it's a big squad now with plenty of competition," he said.

"But whoever is left out of the team will support the lads who get picked. That's the type of squad we've got here.

"It's frustrating being sat on the bench but I'm still young.

"I'm still learning the game and I've just got to keep doing what I do in training, working hard and take my chance."

Everton's progression to the Carling Cup third round has added another fixture to the calendar and Rodwell is desperate for the Blues to do well in the competition.

"The big squad will come into play when the games come thick and fast," he said. "There will be injuries and suspensions and hopefully I can play a lot of games this season.

"We look at this cup as a great opportunity to get silverware we so badly want here.

"We have started to convert the chances and I think now they've started coming they'll carry on coming. We've got the game against Aston Villa on Sunday now, and hopefully we can take the form from the Huddersfield game into that game."

Rodwell scored a memorable goal against Manchester United at Goodison last season and tickets for this season's clash are on sale now - click here, call 0871 663 1878* or visit the Box Office.

Mikel ArreguiI don't believe a single word about Moyes and Rodwell, just rubbish talk of transfer-deadline day. However I'd be happy to sell Pienaar and use the money for a striker or for Donovan, but I don't think that's true either... We have to take all the rumours with a pinch of salt, especially on this date. Don't let's panic because of a bad start, please!

Harvey WilliamsIs it true? are Everton Football Club finally becoming a feeder club for " So called bigger clubs to walk away with the Title." If the latest reports are to be believed, Mr Moyes is Villa bound, Stephen Pienaar is Tottenham bound, and as if losing David Moyes is not bad enough we are very tempted by Man Uniteds offer of £10 Million plus the crocked Michael Carrick ( Admittedly a decent player WHEN fit.) for the future of Everton, namely Jack Rodwell. We should keep this lad at ALL cost. We boo-booed over Dan Gosling, lets for Gods sake not loose these people, just WHO is there to take there place. They are the Future of the club. IF Mr Moyes and Rodwell go, so will a few thousand fans, THEN WHAT.We need financial backing immediately. Other clubs are getting them, just WHY cant a BIG club like Everton.

Phil HaywardJack Rodwell = Top Quality i think he had the best pre season out of everyone and to captain his country at u21 and get mom is just exactly what hes about and why hes are danger man this season. I didnt agree why he had been left out both at blackburn and wolves, becasue he can change games with his passing and his energy from box to box. The way he scored his goal on wednesday night, any player in the world would have been happy with the exchange of both feet to dummy the defender then strike into bottom corner was a WORLD CLASS goal. I understand we have a fantastic squad but i believe jack should be starting in our brilliant team bring on villa 2-1 (Cahill, King Loui)

Wai Kin Lowi think rodwell really has an eye for the goal. he can play behind a striker and start banging some goals from there. can score outside of the box like osman and arteta. and has a big body and height and with guidance from cahill and fellaini, he will score more goals from header as well!!! really loves this player man!!!

DAVE HUNTERNot easy picking a team from the squad we have. 3-5-2 4-4-2 4-3-3 4-5-1 We now have the players to do this. But which one and what players. Moyes you deserve your wages if you can sort it out!!

Malcolm BubbMuhammad - that means you will leave out one of Felli, Arteta, Cahill or Pienaar.

Malcolm BubbRodwell is becoming more and more effective, very quickly now. It's really exciting. Hope to see his defensive game progress at the same rate. Where to play him?!! I think he will be putting pressure on Osman and Billy, which is great. Not sure he can better Heiting or Felli at DM........yet. But if we go to 4-4-2, he might, as an all-rounder.

So disappointedFinally, a young English footballer who doesn't get above his station and shows the patience required to become a top Premiership footballer. All the United boys had to show patience with the quailty that was in their midfield when they were coming through in the early/mid nineties and look how they turned out. Good news for us and England.
