Everton boss David Moyes swooped for Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford yesterday to make him his first signing of the summer.

Beckford's move to Goodison has been on and off for months but finally went through after he headed for Merseyside to finalise terms and undergo a medical.

Free agent Beckford had rival interest from West Ham but wanted to stay in the north for personal reasons.

Moyes has been tracking Beckford for more than a year and stuck to his guns despite the forward's dip in form as Leeds almost blew automatic promotion in the last couple of months of the campaign.

SHANE DUFFY has been described as ‘a very, very lucky boy' by Republic-of-Ireland captain Robbie Keane.

The Tottenham striker has visited Duffy in hospital and revealed the youngster is already plotting his return to action.

Just days after undergoing life saving surgery following a freak accident while on international duty last week, the Blues defender is looking forward to getting back out on the pitch again.

Duffy lost two-thirds of his blood supply after rupturing a hepatic artery during a training game for the Republic of Ireland on Friday evening.

A collision with amateur team goalkeeper Adrian Walsh left the 18-year-old fighting for his life.

Republic doctor Alan Byrne admitted Duffy, who was named Everton's reserve player of the season, was just seconds away from death.

However, following surgery at Dublin's Mater hospital Duffy is now on the mend and could be back in action within three months. Keane visited Duffy with Republic manager Giovanni Trapattoni, his assistant Marco Tardelli and fitness coach Fausto Rossi.

Keane said: "He was very upbeat.

"The lads went in last week and said he wasn't looking very well, but I went in yesterday and he was fine. He had a colour in his face.

"Obviously, he is still in a little bit of pain, but his family was there and it was certainly nice to see him. He is a very nice lad.

"Considering what happened to him, he is very upbeat and he is already looking forward to getting back playing.

"His family was there as well and they are a lovely, lovely family. It was only right as captain to go in and see him.

"Myself, the manager, Marco and Fausto went in also, and it was good to see him.

"He is looking well and he is a very, very lucky boy."

JERMAINE Beckford is poised to complete his free-transfer move to Everton after Leeds United granted David Moyes' club permission to speak to him.

Everton have prepared a four-year deal for Beckford, 26, who scored 31 goals last season as Leeds won promotion to the Championship.

Moyes has a proven track record of signing talent from the lower leagues and Beckford, who has rejected an offer of a new contract at Elland Road, will accompany Everton on a pre-season tour to Australia.

EVERTON are close to agreeing the free transfer signing of in-demand Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford.

Beckford has been offered a four-year deal by the Goodison outfit with David Moyes having been a long-time admirer of the 26-year-old.

Leeds have given permission for Everton to speak to the striker, who is out of contract at the end of next month.

Beckford shot to national prominence in January when his goal at Old Trafford knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup.

Both Newcastle United and Aston Villa have also been tracking Beckford, who scored 30 goals last season to help Leeds win promotion from Coca-Cola League One.

Leeds have been resigned for some time to losing Beckford, and the striker is now on the verge of becoming Moyes's second new arrival this summer after Slovakia goalkeeper Jan Mucha.

Everton are also hoping to finalise a deal for teenage Portuguese striker Joao Silva, while reports in France suggest they are also keen on Marseille forward Hatem Ben Arfa.

The player's agent, Federic Guerra, has claimed Everton are keeping tabs on the 23-year-old, who helped Marseille win their first Ligue 1 title for 18 years this season.

"Everton have been very interested for a while now and it's a possibility," said Guerra.

Anthony HeathWell the lad has a lot to live up to with all the hype he created at Leeds. But he's not exactly a teenager, and I would guess he's as good as he's going to get. He's only costing us wages, so let's give him a chance and see what he produces. I'm sure Moysie can get the best out of him.

philip byrnebeckford scores goals so considerin there was no transfer fee it is worth a punt.lets face it,there isnt many top strikers around unless we willing to spend 20 mill which unless a rich arab cums in we have to make do with the likes of becks unless we sell

Peter SwansonI am for one looking foward to Jermaine starting for the mighty blues ,Like as already been said ,the lad has pace and knows where the goal is ,which has been lacking for us up front ,we have finishers but no-one who can run . and with our midfield we should (injury free ) have a excellent season to come ..Welcome to EVERTON jermaine .. IMWT.....

darren allenI'm wondering what formation DM is going to go with next season. Will there be a place for Timmy and if so, who will be the one striker that gets the nod??? I personally would like to see him try with either 442 or 433 sometimes as we do not have a plan b. For the first time since I can remember, we do not need the dogs of war as we have an abundance of quality...coyb

Paul Ellambeckford (if he has really signed) is worth a shot. its not like we have splashed £10 million on him is it, hes free! and with moyes track record of getting the best from lower league players we shouldnt really be doubting him over this. personally, i would still like a top top striker signing as well, especially if yakubu is let go!

Friday 28th May 15:01 Report Comment

timothy harrisI think his united performance is only a fraction of what Beckford can do and lets be honest DM is notorious for for bringing in lower level players & turning them in to big name players plus DM gets the best out of anyone. great signing

Jeremy TinstonWelcome to Everton JB, B under no illusion you will be expected to work hard in every game to earn the love of the fans, reputations mean nothing, good performances and loyalty mean everything. I'm sure you won't let us down. just had alook at Hatem Ben Arfa on u tube, looks like a usefull mf player to have, b nice if DM could pull that signing off along with joao silva. let BK frees up some funds:)

Friday 28th May 13:46 Report Comment

Neil BullockIn all fairness it's a win win situation for us as he's on a free. If it works out then DM has uncovered a gem, if not then we can offload him and cash in. I think with Vaughan and Saha so injury prone, we do need a striker who can run around and close down the opposition someone like Beckford.

Friday 28th May 12:54 Report Comment

Neil Vaughanlooks like yet ANOTHER pre-season when they promise the world but fail to deliver...Teams who want to be considered top 4 material DON'T sign players from the 27year old's from the 3rd Division.....very very disappointed !!
