Tim Cahill says his friend Mikel Arteta deserves a call up to the Spain squad this summer whether Cesc Fabregas makes the World Cup or not.

And the Aussie has also offered his support to Everton’s latest injury victim Dan Gosling after his bad news this week.

Arsenal midfielder Fabregas cracked his right fibula during the Champions League clash with Barcelona and now faces at least six weeks out.

The injury means the Gunners captain's World Cup campaign is now in question.

Cahill admits if that's the case then attentions may turn to his Everton teammate but says Arteta should go to South Africa whether Fabregas makes it or not.

"Mikel is one of my closest friends and I think Mikel deserves to be in the squad on his own merits," the Australian told evertonTV.  "For Spain it is important they do get Fabregas back because you saw against Barcelona how talented he is.  Maybe if he doesn't make it back then Mikel could get the chance to be in the squad.

"I think the best thing for Mikky is to just get fit and everyone knows what he can do," he continued.  "The Spanish manager knows that too.

"Even without the Fabregas incident I think Mikel deserves a chance if he can get himself up to full fitness."

Despite establishing himself in the Premier League since his arrival at Everton in 2005 Arteta has never played for his country.

In a crushing twist of fate, the Spaniard revealed he was set for his first call up in February 2009.

However he suffered a serious knee injury during the Newcastle game just 24 hours before the squad was announced and his name was removed from the list.

Cahill says Arteta would be a valuable asset for Spain this summer and believes his recent performances with Everton prove he is ready.

"He has always had the right temperament.  He is always ready for anything and is a great professional.

"I think maybe there is a question is over the length of time he had out and how fit his body will be in six or eight weeks time," Cahill continued.  "That though is the same for every player.

"I think what Mikky has done over the years so far means he warrants a place already but there is only one man who can make the decision."

Meanwhile Cahill says the whole squad are supporting Dan Gosling after a scan revealed he'd ruptured his cruciate ligament.

The injury means the young midfielder will be out of action for nine months.

But Cahill says the whole Club's behind him as he starts his long road to recovery.

"It is going to be a lengthy lay off for him but there are a lot of us here who have had similar injuries.

"It gives you a time to reflect so you try to learn about your injury and also learn about life in general," he explained.  "Dan will have a lot of great support from all the lads.

"He is only young so he has got plenty of years of football left in him so he just needs to be professional and try to learn from this experience."

Paul Ellamit would be great to see him play for spain in a major tournament but the spanish squad is such that even fabregas struggles to get in!

Captain Thaddeus HarrisThe sad thing is, If Mikel played for Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd etc he would get picked in an instant. The spanish manager obviously hasn't got an interest in him which i think is a crying shame not only for Mikel but for the spanish national side. Sadly, i can't see Mikel ever getting in the squad.

Mick EganArteta more than deserves a chance with Spain, he is cool headed, consistent and as Cahill says a great professional......Although he may have only been back for a few months when the world cup starts, it may well be an advantage, as he may prove more fresh than those whom have played all season!! Good luck Mikel.....

david harmanArteta is without a doubt a great player and should be given the chance to play for his country at least once. If Spain don`t want him in their team then the England manager should give him a chance to play for us.

Mark LynchIt would be criminal if Our teta did not make it to the world cup, i for one am all for him playing for England if Spain dont want him, i know that that would never happen, but could you imagine all the controversy, that would come of it if he scored against Spain at any stage let alone the closing stages of the world.. we can but dream tho. i do know this tho Mikky, deserves to grace the best stage in the world.. Mark ReidArteta's certainly the best player I can think of that's never had a single cap. 12 months out with a ruptured ACL and he's back to his best inside of a month back. 4 in 3 games in March. Wins against Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City - twice. He's worth more than ten times the amount David Moyes and Everton paid for it. The team's win statistics with him playing and missing show that. A very VERY special player certainly equal to Fabregas, but with more experience.
