LABBY ON SIR TOM FINNEY
“I marked him once when I was 18 because Tom could play centre-forward as well as left and right wing. I was keen to make an impression and I had quite a good game, which helped consolidate my place in the first-team.”
LABBY ON HIS EDUCATION
“I was quite bright but I certainly wasn’t university class! Some people think footballers are as thick as the wall…but that’s not true. It gets up my nose when people say that footballers are as thick as two short planks…even though some of them prove they are!”
LABBY ON MARKING PELE
“I remember thinking that I’d rather be in Greenall Whitley land!”
LABBY ON THE 1966 FA CUP FINAL
“I was thinking that maybe it will have to be next year…but Mike Treble-Cock, as we called him in those days, did well for us! Meeting Princess Margaret was great – she was a big Evertonian!”
LABBY ON HIS 1967 ‘RETIREMENT’
“I wasn’t playing well and my father had his central-heating business so I had something to go into. I gave Harry Catterick 12 months to find himself a centre-half but then I started playing better, got picked for England…and changed my mind!”
