Cenk Tosun says he was determined to make his mark in an Everton shirt before the summer break.

Striker Tosun is preparing for a busy fortnight with Turkey’s national team – after seizing his Everton starting chance in goalscoring style on the season’s last day.

The 27-year-old pounced for the Blues' second goal of a 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur and confessed his desire to score prompted him to celebrate “like a crazy boy”.

Tosun viewed his side’s result against Champions League finalists Spurs, as further evidence Everton can “compete in every match”.

And on a personal note, he was pleased to contribute after making his first start in the Premier League for three months.

“What happens in the final game stays in people’s minds,” Tosun told evertonfc.com.

“It leaves a mark going into the summer. It was important for me to play well in that last match against Tottenham.

“I hadn’t started for a while but I still felt I was playing with confidence, which you need to be competitive in the Premier League against top defenders.

“In those types of games, against strong teams, you don’t touch the ball often as a striker, you have to do a lot of work off the ball, running and fighting.

“But I think I held it up well and I was in the right place to score the second goal.”

Tosun featured 25 times in the 2018-19 Premier League campaign, starting 10 matches.

He primarily duelled with Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the lone out-and-out striker’s position up for grabs in Marco Silva’s team.

Richarlison also filled that role for a period – but Calvert-Lewin claimed the spot for an extended spell after excelling in a 3-0 victory at Cardiff City in late February.

A training ground knock for Calvert-Lewin presented Tosun with his opening at Spurs, where Everton were seeking a fourth unbeaten game to complete the campaign.

He delivered a combative and resourceful display, capped by a goal prodded in from close range which Tosun celebrated by charging ecstatically to the hordes of Evertonians congregated in one corner of the stadium.

Tosun provided three key passes in the game, struck two of his three shots on target and won four aerial battles.

He was denied the satisfaction of his strike deciding the game, however, with Spurs’ Christian Eriksen arcing home a free-kick to rescue one point for his team.

“I was hungry for the shirt and that was why I gave everything,” said Tosun.

“We were the better side in the match and I want to congratulate our team because they played well for a lot of the season.

“I thought we deserved three points in the last match because we created more chances than Tottenham. We were unfortunate to concede from a free-kick – although it was a great strike from Eriksen.

“But we played very well and it felt like we were growing stronger through the game. It is a good sign for this team, how we can compete in every match.”

Tosun scored twice in the first half of the campaign, the former Besiktas player on target in home victories over Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Prior to netting against Spurs, his most recent club goal came against Millwall in January’s FA Cup tie.

Tosun struck twice for Turkey in the intervening period to help seal a 4-0 European Championship qualifying victory over Moldova.

He is now readying himself for friendly matches with Greece and Uzbekistan before Turkey put their 100 per cent qualifying record – they also defeated Albania in March – on the line in games against France and Iceland.

And the centre-forward says he will join up with his country buoyed by fresh memories of scoring for Everton.

“I celebrated like a crazy boy because I hadn’t score since the game at Millwall,” added Tosun.

“We played very well in the second half against Tottenham and it was in my heart to score. When I did, I celebrated like crazy.

“The goal really meant a lot to me. I wanted to score so much in this match and the feeling was wonderful, especially in front of our supporters.”
