Gomes: 'Strong Chemistry' Helping Me Thrive At Everton

Andre Gomes says the strong chemistry he has struck up with his Everton teammates and the Club’s coaching staff has helped him to thrive on Merseyside.

The Portuguese produced the latest in a series of high-calibre midfield displays in the Blues’ 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

The result represented the Toffees’ third top-flight success on the spin and means Marco Silva’s team are now just one point behind seventh-placed Leicester City.

Gomes was an instrumental figure in an ambitious, purposeful Everton performance against the Gunners.

His progressive and precise work in possession helped the Blues regularly carve open the Arsenal defence.

Gomes hit 36 accurate passes in the opposition half – more than any other player on the pitch. Moreover, he found a teammate with 89.5 per cent of his passes, the best rate of any individual who completed the 90 minutes at Goodison Park.

The former Valencia player’s industry and team ethic also impressed. Gomes worked tirelessly for the cause, covering more ground than any player across the Premier League weekend (7.8 miles).

The midfielder was quick to highlight the influence of compatriot Silva and the Everton coaching staff in helping him play to his full potential, and added he is savouring playing alongside the Club's talented players.

“Marco Silva has been very good for me,” said Gomes, who joined Everton on a season-long loan from Barcelona last summer.

“Not just the manager, though, but all of his coaching staff.

“And if you have good teammates with high quality, too, you will learn much more, so I have to thank all of them.

“We have a lot of players who have got very good ability, especially on the ball. It is really good when all the players have the confidence to keep playing.

“There is a lot of high quality around me, so it is easier for me to play and create the space for them. We try to get the chemistry with players around us.

“So I enjoy it a lot playing with them. We are very happy with how we are playing at the moment.”

Still just 25 years of age, Gomes boasts an impressive CV which includes several notable achievements.

He has won 29 senior caps for Portugal and was an influential part of the team which triumphed at the 2016 European Championships in France.

The midfielder has won league titles with Barcelona and Benfica and helped the Portuguese side reach the Europa League final in 2013.

Gomes has quickly emerged as a fans’ favourite at Everton since making his Toffees debut in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Goodison Park on 21 October.

He has established himself as a mainstay of manager Silva’s team, starting 22 of Everton’s 24 Premier League matches since then, and delivering a host of accomplished displays.

Gomes insists he can elevate his performance levels even further, adding he will continue working hard as he bids to become one of the pre-eminent midfielders in the game.

“I think I have much more to do and, honestly, much more to learn,” he added.

“I am trying to train hard, enjoy it day by day and learn with the players and the staff.

“I want to be a top player for the next years.”
