Gomes Reveals Twin Chelsea Motivation

Andre Gomes will be fuelled by twin ambitions when Everton tackle Chelsea at Goodison Park this weekend.

Everton have eight games remaining this term and midfielder Gomes is viewing Sunday's clash as the potential catalyst for a productive finish to the campaign.

Furthermore, the 25-year-old is desperately keen to hand Evertonians a three-point “gift” in return for the “amazing” support he’s received from the Club’s fans this term.

Gomes is poised for his 21st Premier League start against Chelsea after returning to Marco Silva's team at Newcastle United seven days ago.

“It will be a big challenge but we are at home and it is an opportunity to play in front of our fans with an amazing atmosphere at Goodison,” said Gomes.

“We want a good performance against Chelsea and to pick up points throughout the rest of the season. We will have tough fixtures until the end, so we want to build confidence with this game.

“We know Chelsea are very strong but we will be prepared for that and, playing at home, we want to give a gift to our fans.

“We want the three points and we have prepared to try to achieve our aim. In the training sessions, we focus on the next game and, against Chelsea, we want to give a good example of how to play at home for our fans and get the three points for them.”

Gomes joined Everton on loan from Barcelona on the eve of this campaign and, after recovering from a hamstring problem, had an exceptionally busy Premier League baptism.

The Portuguese, a European Championship winner in 2016, played 19 top-flight matches in succession following his classy debut in the 2-0 Goodison victory over Crystal Palace back in October.

Gomes, then, effectively squeezed half-a-season’s worth of league football into 111 days.

Previously with Benfica in his homeland and La Liga club Valencia, before two years with Barca, he reckons the division he’s in right now is the cream of the crop.

“I’m really happy here, I’m happy with everyone and the fans have been amazing,” said Gomes.

“My teammates are like a family for me. I’m enjoying playing here and I will enjoy the next games.

“The people here respect football, the fans respect the players.

“It is a different way of watching football – they love football.

“And there’s some differences on the field – the intensity of the game, how you can play away against a team with fewer points but lose if you are not 100 per cent.

“It is a really tough competition and we have to be 100 per cent every game to get a result.

“In La Liga, it is more technical… but I think the Premier League is on top right now, the way the people feel the game, the intensity of the game, it is amazing.”

Gomes was in immaculate touch when Everton met Chelsea four months ago and secured a draw at Stamford Bridge which formed part of a positive sequence of results that saw manager Silva’s side move into the top-six.

The player is convinced his team boasts the quality to embark on a similar run and climb the table again.

And after getting a taste of Goodison at its most partisan for this month’s Merseyside derby, Gomes is hoping for a similarly united effort from players and supporters in pursuit of victory over this weekend’s visitors, who sit sixth in the Premier League and have claimed 10 points from their past five games.

“The atmosphere was amazing in the derby,” added Gomes.

“We have to invite the fans to be like that and, if we are winning, playing well, being a strong team, they will be with us all the time.

“But we will try to do our part and we want the fans to share how we feel on the pitch.

“We want to go step by step for the rest of this season, starting with Chelsea, and achieve the maximum number of points possible.”
