Bernard Relishing Richarlison Link-Up

Bernard says he is relishing linking up with “great player” Richarlison at Everton as he backed his countryman to continue to shine for Club and country.

The Brazilian duo started together for the first time in the Toffees’ 2-1 win at Leicester City last time out and offered a tantalising glimpse of the excitement they could provide Evertonians over the coming season.

Both were instrumental figures in an expansive attacking display – a performance which boss Marco Silva described as “an image” of how he wants his side to perform.

The pair combined to devastating effect for the Blues’ opener at the King Power Stadium. After a dazzling, jinking run that left the Leicester backline tied up in knots, Bernard stood up a cross which Richarlison volleyed home at the back post.

Bernard, who was a constant threat throughout against the Foxes in what his first Premier League start, believes there is more to come from the duo.

He is convinced they can help the Blues build momentum as they target a third straight top-flight victory against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park on Sunday.

“Richarlison has been doing brilliantly and is a great player to have with us,” Bernard told evertontv.

“He deserves everything he has been getting. It feels good to play together.

“For his goal [against Leicester], it felt good for me to help the team and with it being a Brazilian player scoring, it was even more special.

“But the whole team played well. When they lost a player, we were able to impose ourselves, make the most of that and get the result.

“Now we want to keep going and achieve more.”

Richarlison is currently on international duty with Brazil and could feature as the five-times world champions take on fierce rivals Argentina in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old announced himself on the international scene in some style last month – hitting a brace on his full debut as the Selecao beat El Salvador 5-0.

Having swiftly settled into life at Goodison Park, skilful winger Bernard revealed his ambition to follow in Richarlison’s footsteps by shining for Everton and catching the attention of Brazil boss Tite.

Bernard, who has won 14 caps for his country, emphasised his focus is on the Blues - fully aware that international recognition will be achieved by delivering consistently excellent performances at club level.

“Richarlison is a really great player and really deserves the call up for the Brazil team,” he added. “He has been doing well and has the characteristics to play well in the Premier League.

“For me, it is something [an international call-up] that would be nice but I want to focus on Everton first.

“I did not play for six months [before I moved to Everton]. I have been playing well but have only just got here.

“Things happen naturally. I want to concentrate here and keep doing well and perhaps something will come up.

“But I need to show my football here and see how it goes from there.”
