Angharad James insists Everton Ladies are ready for the challenge against Reading in their Continental Cup clash on Sunday and is confident the Blue Girls have the gameplan to emerge victorious (2pm kick-off).
Reading finished fourth in the Women’s Super League in 2017-18 but the midfielder insists the Toffees will use their 2-0 home victory over Kelly Chambers’ side last season as a blueprint for success.
Everton head into the match aiming to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat in their opening Continental Cup group stage game at Durham three weeks ago.
James is convinced the Blue Girls have the quality and tactical awareness to kickstart their season with a victory at Southport’s Merseyrail Community Stadium.
“I worked closely with the staff last year in making sure I knew what their gameplan was and how we, as a group, could execute it,” revealed the Wales international.
“Their movement in midfield and up front is very good. They are very clever at dragging people out of positions to create space for other people to move into and we saw that last year. Hopefully we can nullify that.
“It [the home win over Reading] was one of the best team performances last year. We know what we’ve got to do to win the game at the weekend and we’ll do everything we can this week to put that in place.
“We know it’s going to be a difficult game because they are good side with some real threats going forward. But we have knuckled down this week and know if we can execute our gameplan we can cause them problems.”
Everton Ladies embarked on a run to the semi-finals of the Women’s FA Cup last season, where they were edged out 2-1 by Arsenal.
James – the reigning Everton Ladies Player of the Season – says the Blue Girls are determined to go deep in the cup competitions again this season.
“We want to get out of the group stages and go far in the Continental Cup this year,” he said. “It’s important we get a result against Reading.
“Our performance against Durham wasn’t good enough but we have learned a lot from that game.
“On Sunday, it will be about managing Reading’s threat and exploiting them when we attack.”
