England Duty Can Help Calvert-Lewin's Everton 'Hot Streak'

Dominic Calvert-Lewin says England Under-21s’ back-to-back European Championship qualifying matches are providing him with more valuable experience.

And the express Everton forward – who clocked a 2018-19 Premier League-high running speed of 34.9kph against Southampton last month – is aiming to report back from national-team duty primed to continue his “hot streak” in club colours.

Calvert-Lewin scored three goals in two matches before linking up with Aidy Boothroyd’s Under-21s and was the young Lions’ chief goal threat in a cat-and-mouse encounter with Holland on Thursday night.

That game ended scoreless, although Calvert-Lewin came closer than anyone to manufacturing a breakthrough when his effort was cleared off the line after being initially smothered by goalkeeper Justin Bijlow.

England Under-21s play in Latvia on Tuesday when they could potentially seal qualification for next year’s finals in Italy and San Marino.

“The first few months working under the new manager [Marco Silva] have been good for me, he is helping me all the time,” Calvert-Lewin told evertontv.

“I was not sure if the international break was coming at a good time because I had hit a hot streak.

“But it is important for me and an opportunity to keep building my confidence. The game against Holland was my third start in a short space of time and these are vital matches for us.

“It is good experience and I want to maintain my good form – and continue getting back to full fitness.”

Calvert-Lewin marked his first start under Goodison Park boss Silva by striking twice in a 3-1 victory over Rotherham United. He followed up his Carabao Cup double by heading home Lucas Digne’s pinpoint cross last Saturday when Everton drew with Huddersfield Town in their final game before the international break.

The 21-year-old was eased back into action this season after a back problem prematurely ended his 2017-18 campaign.

He directly contributed to 10 Premier League goals in 32 appearances last term – scoring four and assisting six – and turned in a powerful display on his first top-flight start this season against Huddersfield.

Calvert-Lewin completed eight sprints, won six aerial duels, aimed three shots at goal and covered 10.7km.

His equalising goal immediately stoked talk of Calvert-Lewin forging a potent relationship with 21-cap Frenchman Digne, with the left-back also the architect of the striker’s opener against Rotherham.

And with former Barcelona player Digne the latest addition to Everton’s rich creative resources, Calvert-Lewin is aiming to surpass the eight goals he scored in all competitions last term.

“The match against Huddersfield was only my second start this season and they both came inside four days, so I felt it a bit towards the end,” said Calvert-Lewin.

“But I am just aiming to improve. I came into this season wanting to go better than I did last season with my goals scored and I am off to a good start.

“We have a lot of players capable of putting excellent crosses into dangerous areas. It was a lovely ball from Lucas last week. I know what his left foot can do and knew when he got the ball he would put it in the box and I got my head on it.

“We have a good relationship. I get on really well with him in the changing room and, hopefully, we can continue to transfer that onto the pitch and I can keep scoring goals.”
