Blues Duo Move Young Lions Close To Euro Finals

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tom Davies helped keep England Under-21s on course for the 2019 European Championship finals after a goalless draw with Holland – as Fraser Hornby bagged a hat-trick in Scotland Under-21s’ 3-0 success over Andorra.

Fresh from grabbing three goals in two games for Everton last week against Rotherham and Huddersfield, Calvert-Lewin started for the Young Lions at Norwich City’s Carrow Road, leading the attack and going close to breaking the deadlock either side of the break.

His Toffees teammate Davies came on as a 65th-minute substitute for England and, after carving out a chance for Dominic Solanke, the Everton Academy graduate went close to winning it in stoppage-time when his shot was cleared off the line.

The point sees Aidy Boothroyd’s team – who also had Blues Jonjoe Kenny and Kieran Dowell on the bench - looking likely for next summer’s finals in Italy as they sit top of Group 4, five points clear of Holland with three matches to go.

Scotland Under-21s are third in that qualifying group courtesy of a 3-0 success against Andorra in Edinburgh, with Everton Under-23s striker Hornby netting a treble.

The 18-year-old, who penned his first professional contract with the Blues in July, grabbed his opener from the penalty spot before a header and first-time finish earned him the match ball.

In other international action on Thursday night, Seamus Coleman captained the Republic of Ireland in their 4-1 Nations League defeat to Wales in Cardiff. Ashley Williams – who is on loan at Stoke City for the 2018-19 campaign – skippered the hosts.
