Sigurdsson Calls On Everton To Keep Entertaining

Gylfi Sigurdsson says Everton are eager to continue to entertain the fans and maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a victory over Huddersfield Town at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The playmaker also stressed the importance of keeping up the feelgood factor at the Club heading into the international break by securing all three points against David Wagner's Terriers.

Sigurdsson has kicked off the season in impressive style and got his first goal of the campaign against Rotherham United Wednesday night, sweeping home in the first half to set the Blues on their way to a 3-1 victory.

The Toffees’ Club-record signing has been a key figure in Everton’s vibrant start to 2018-19, with his expansive passing, intelligent movement and outstanding close control contributing to a series of progressive, fast-paced attacking displays.

Marco Silva’s side have scored two or more goals in each of their four matches so far. Sigurdsson insists there is even more to come and revealed the squad is intent on producing another dynamic performance.

"The manager wants to entertain the fans and, of course, the most important thing is to get results," he said. "Going forward, our play has been good and we can even improve that a little bit more.

“I think it will be very important to keep the run going [against Huddersfield]. Every game in this league is very tough. It doesn’t matter where you go or who you play at your stadium, it’s going to be a tough game. Huddersfield are no different and we know that from last season when they managed to grind out some good results to stay up.

“It would be fantastic for us to keep the run going and get another three points on Saturday.”

Sigurdsson’s strike against Rotherham came hot on the heels of another impressive display from the Icelander in the Blues’ 2-2 draw at Bournemouth last week.

Sigurdsson was the Toffees' chief creative force on the south coast. His pinpoint cross was headed home by Michael Keane for Everton’s second goal against the Cherries, while the playmaker’s quality on the ball was evident throughout - his 87-per-cent passing accuracy was bettered by only Keane in the Blues side.

The 28-year-old has made eight key passes already this season – the fifth highest in the Premier League. This statistic is all the more impressive when you consider he played only 40 minutes of the Toffees’ Premier League opener at Wolverhampton Wanderers, having made way for defender Mason Holgate following skipper Phil Jagielka’s sending off.

Everton boss Silva has also been eager to praise Sigurdsson's tireless work-rate, describing him as “fantastic with and without the ball".

The former Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, who has won 60 caps for his country, says the manager's expressive style of football has helped him to thrive. He believes an exciting future lies ahead for the Blues under the Portuguese.

“He’s one of those managers that you really believe in,” explained Sigurdsson, who opened the scoring in Everton's 2-0 win over Huddersfield at Goodison last December. “He’s very organised. All of the boys really enjoy working with him and working under him. All of us are really looking forward to this season and hopefully we can continue this run.

“He wants us to work hard, press from the front and play good football.

“You get a lot of confidence from him and I think the hard work we’ve been putting in is coming together. We’ve got the players and the squad to push on an improve on last season.”
