Evertonians Urged To Support Foodbank Initiative

Evertonians are being encouraged to support the ‘Fans Supporting Foodbanks’ initiative taking place before every home match this season.

A group of supporters have come together to call on football fans attending matches to Goodison Park to take any non-perishable food they can spare and drop it off at the Fans Supporting Foodbanks van at the Park End.

The Fans Supporting Foodbanks was set up by local Everton and Liverpool supporter groups in conjunction with North Liverpool Foodbank, Anfield Breckside Community Centre, Unite in the Community and the Trussel Trust, and has received the backing of both football clubs and many other club’s supporter groups. Ahead of each matchday, volunteers from North Liverpool Foodbank are joined by supporters to help collect food donated by fans.

It is estimated foodbanks across the UK support more than one million people each year, including more than 160,000 in the North West. The North Liverpool Foodbank helps over 250 people each week in our area with emergency food parcels. People access the foodbank due to a variety of different circumstances – such as delay or change in welfare payments, low income, illness or sudden unemployment.

Rachael Miekle, Supporter Liaison Officer at Everton, said: “The foodbank van is well established on a Goodison matchday and the support it has had from supporters over the years has been brilliant. It is testament to the hard work of all those involved that we have seen this initiative inspire fans from other parts of the country and across the leagues.

“We’ve regularly seen other visiting club’s supporters get involved in the past with some clubs hosting their own similar initiatives, showing just how important this issue is in the United Kingdom. We look forward to getting as many donations as possible throughout the season and making a real contribution to the cause.”

The Fans Supporting Foodbanks donation van will be located at the Park End close to the Fan Zone before kick off at every home match. Supporters attending the game can drop off any non-perishable food items right up until kick-off.
